Rational people measure wealth with money. The safest money is the USD. The safest way to keep USD is in US treasuries, which lose only a little of its value annually.

National governments don't keep a lot of cash. The owners of US treasuries are mostly wealthy private citizens. About half are US citizens. Unless they stole the money, they earned or inherited it according to the rules of our economy. If you know of any crime, call 911.

Most of the other owners of US treasuries are Asian exporters. If they had a better investment for their dollars, it would be there but it’s not. The poor saps!

During the 1960s to 1980s, the Japanese sent us millions of good cars, hard assets. We sent them dollars which are slowly rotting away. The poor saps!

You beat them. You got something for nothing. Stop worrying.

ELR: Employer of Last Resort. The federal government, with its printer, would hire any adult willing and able to work at $10 per hour for a forty-hour week with full benefits: health insurance , paid vacation, paid maternity leave, etc. The old, ill, and disabled are treated with other programs.

These ELR workers are then available for work at no cost for any federal, state, or local government office or for any qualified NGO: Red Cross, Salvation Army, etc. Any necessary training would be financed by the federal government.

This would establish a national minimum wage and put an end to unemployment, poverty, and all relief programs for the able-bodied: food stamps, housing, etc.

Public schools and preschools would get all the help they need from the ELR ranks. Pot-holes would be filled by ELR workers as they occurred. Streets would be clean. Broken windows would be fixed. Crime rates would drop.

With training, 60,000 bridges and 50,000 dams and a million miles of roads in need of repair would get fixed.

Stores would have shoppers instead of idle cashiers. Factories would hire and hum. The ELR workers would find jobs at $11 per hour and the ELR ranks would thin out. Tax revenue would jump. The deficit would decline.

Prosperity would reign. Wall Street would love it.

Agreed CDM, I wasn't putting anymore blame from one party to the other. The banks in their greed, began a unethical yet profitable practice, and as each one got away with it others followed in sync. This was something they created at their own hand, ergo and they should have been accountable for it's recovery. Their willingness to make changes in their contracts (mortgages) as more and more people began to fail by increased payments. I didn't happen, what I saw was an unwillingness to give anything up, and instead look for a government bail out.

The conservative philosophy of government was best stated by President Coolidge: “The chief business of the American people is business.” He was wrong. The chief business of the American people is exactly that which appears in the preamble to our Constitution: “to... promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessing of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity”

Yes, there was a time when “Welfare” was not a dirty word. Times change, but the Founding Liberals can’t change with them. They wrote what they wrote and their most important word is “Posterity”. They understood why we are here on Earth: the motivating force of life is survival of the species. A nation without a thriving young generation faces its doom. Care of the young is the highest priority of every animal on earth - except the conservative. Mother Nature is a liberal!

The idea that liberals want equality of wealth is a self-induced hallucination. Liberals want a true equality of opportunity for all children, regardless of parentage. To thrive, our entire youngest generation, from prenatal through university, must get all the health care, food, shelter, and play they need and as much free education as they can absorb.

When 99% of all scientific discoveries are made by 1% of all scientists, providing excellent care only for children of the rich will not produce enough brilliant leaders in technology, industry, and government. If you want all the cream, you have to milk all the cows. A level playing field and equal opportunity from the moment of conception are the liberal’s core beliefs.

Support for children by local taxes inevitably result in deprived areas. To be equitably distributed, care of the young must be financed by progressive federal spending. Commensurate with their means, all Americans must share the load. Fairness and cooperation are the liberal’s core beliefs.

Conservatives hold the opposite view. They believe children should be rewarded or punished depending on how well or how poorly they choose their parents. They want the care of the young to be financed by local taxes so that quality of education is doled out according to class and so that fundamentalist school boards can teach creationism instead of science.

Instead of taxing wealthy estates, consisting mostly of never-taxed capital gains and municipal bond interest, they would endow the least productive segment of society: children of the rich. Since Congress can be bought, wealth is power and inherited wealth is inherited power – aristocracy - the exact opposite of democracy, the exact opposite of meritocracy, the survival and triumph of the incompetent. This is dishonesty and corruption. Conservatism is a crime against Nature!

The human race progressed because evolution gave us the instinct for community: the solidarity of the clan, the tribe, and the nation that other primates could not attain. We became civilized because we took care of each other through fire and flood Conservatives want to destroy that solidarity. Now they want to destroy FEMA! Come hell or high water, you’re on your own!

Conservatives believe the tax burden should be shifted from the rich to the middle class, from capital to labor. They would create a polarized generation: a small aristocracy and a large underclass - a lost generation. This is a complete betrayal of the Founding Liberals.

This is without a doubt the most putrid and vile hate mongering I have seen in my time on OPP. If this hatred for the American people indeed permeates our general thinking we are doomed as a nation and have certainly become something less than a civil society.

Is this the face of the Democrat party, of Progressivism in the United States? If so, then horrible internal conflict is inevitable. And we say the Muslims have not come out of the 7th century?

Am I wrong? Do conservatives believe, as I do, that schools should be financed entirely by the federal government? This is beyond belief. Most conservatives want to get rid of all federal interference with education.

Or do they believe that local property taxes should do most of the financing? That is my understanding and is certainly the current status of education. Please elucidate.
