The last balanced budget was the Gingrich led Republican congress along with Clinton who was originally against the idea. Remember, deficit's aren't necessarily bad. It is the ratio of deficit to revenue that's important.

I have never had credit card debt. I have not always had a great salary, but I made sure that I lived within my means. Except for medical debt, I see excessive credit card debt as the fault of the card holder. The credit card companies will extend credit almost indefinitely, to almost everyone. They sometimes charge interest rates that are usury. It is their fault if they can't rein in the irresponsible.

Once upon a time we could do that.. but it ended so the tax reduction for personal aircraft could be justified.
History of the personal interest deduction
