Thoughts on the quote? I am
not going to (and would prefer if you know who, you not say) name the individual who said this. I am merely inquiring as to thoughts on the statement.
Quote:
"As a voter what I look for is whether somebody shares my view of government and its proper role. That person may or may not share my faith; that person may or may not have any faith. Im hiring them not to be my minister. Im hiring them to represent me in government. I want to know what they think the proper role of government is."
I value everyone's First Amendment rights; however, could we please try and utilize civil First Amendment rights?

it sounds like someone from the beginning of this country in one of our 'documents of inception.' but i believe that it iz someone in the recent past who flip-flopped...hillary clinton.
History has taught me,,,, that "character" matters more than agreement as agreements can change,,,, "character" is a constant....

I have no idea who said it and that really doesn't matter in my estimation.
What makes me want to say I agree with the statement is the use of the term, " Proper Government." My thoughts on today's confusion in the political scene is that the Government is not operating properly.
There is no need to keep repeating the many areas where this applies . I agree that we are not hiring a saint to be president or other positions of leadership. But the public investigates these people more closely than they do their ministers. The saddest part of this, these people get elected over and over again no matter what they have been found involved in or even guilty of.
I suppose one could say we need to make sure we elect the best sinner out of all the bad ones.

It is not about whose quote it is. It is about whether you believe it is a valid point.

An excellent perspective and accurate, in my opinion.

A few thoughts on the quote come to mind immediately.
First, the person definitely sounds Libertarian. I, being a Conservative Libertarian, recognize the thought process.
Second, I agree with the statement at face value. That's the Libertarian in me.
Third, I also think that while a representative of government isn't required to be a person of faith (not a deal-breaker for me), I do think that a strong moral compass grounded in Christianity is a virtue I would prefer for them to possess. (Like many of the Founders). I also realize that Christians tend to lean toward policy guided by the Bible, rather than the Constitution...which is why I struggle with my position on certain social issues.

At last :!: :-P :!:
Should we be one or two issue voters? If it is a Constitutional issue, my answer is
YES-resounding! There are many
"social issues" where an attempt is made to make them a rights issue, not, in any way, part of Constitutional rights.

Yes, AuntieE, I believe it is.

I agree with the quote, in it's simplest perspective. Determining a candidates view of the proper role of Government, is a much harder task. It appears that our current representatives believe that the role of Gov. is to provide them with opportunities for gaining wealth, prestige and power. Determining a candidates viewpoint, by words alone, is not advisable. Neither can one determine a persons faith by words alone.
Far too many public representatives of "faith" have been shown to be as human as anyone else, for that to be a determining factor. Professing one's faith is a mere formality. Living one's faith is much more real enterprise and a more accurate portrayal of a persons beliefs. I don't place much stock in what people say, it's how they act that tells the story. I want to know how they act Monday through Saturday, not how they act on Sunday.
Clarify : "public representatives of "faith" have been shown to be as human as anyone else, for that to be a determining factor."
Do you mean that the elected person was "Elected as a representative of 'faith'???, or that he has faith and was elected sort of on the virtue of that,,, as though that affirmation guarantees a civil and honest outcome,,,

When it comes to choosing a president i look for 3 qualities----wholesome character--good head and someone with good ideas for how they will try to improve the country. (not fairybook ideas)

Obviously, a lack of ability to kindly understand and refrain from providing the name of the person saying this
totally escaped your notice. I wanted it to be about the thought not the person.
