The pen was a temporary object of focus. We use objects like that when we are dealing with folks too high and confused to pay attention to simple commands. Of course we do not give them pens, we have rainbow colored stuffed animals, like snakes or lizards. It tedders them in the moment and allows them to be grounded. Excellent observation on your part!

When I was a hostage negotiator that was the most difficult part, keeping the subject focused on our conversation, especially when they were drugged up. Very effective.

I'm a cop, I use objects of focus more often than handcuffs. Works very well on senile dementia too!
