I’m just reading about the black backlash ( I guess that’s what you’d call it) and I’m offended and “hurt” that anything named for Robert E. Lee must go because the black cadets getting a free education are offended. Robert E. Lee graduated from West Point with honors and NO DEMERITS. He was an exemplary Cadet. He was an exemplary officer. He owned no slaves. He was loyal to his own state, Virginia, in the Civil War, because it was NOT about slavery. It was about the Constitutional right for each state to rule itself as long as it did NOT go against the Constitution.
Because he was the best of the best, Lincoln wanted him to head up the Union Army.
Because of his choice, he was denied everything...citizenship, his property, everything but his dignity was taken from him. Not only taken from him, but from his family. Without realizing what they were doing, they memorialized him by using his Plantation, Arlington, as the burial site for America’s bravest. Now a few blacks who had the “white “ privilege of going to that most honored Academy designed by the Polish General Kosciusko whose statue stands on West Point, call him traitor and want Lee erased from West Point history, I guess he’ll have to go. He cannot be erased from our history because he was bigger than life. A giant among men, an honorable man whose memory stands above all Generals throughout Americas history. How far have we fallen?

What you say is correct and for all the right reasons. The Point is no place for politics. What he accomplished there was before the Civil war even started!

You'd be the first to fall face first down on the ground during graduation on the Annapolis parade grounds.
As your commanding officer I'd make you pick up every cigarette butt off the ground for 2 square miles

A lot of people mistakenly think that the civil War was about slavery. It is easy to see why they think this though, because every state that left the Union stated in the documents passed by its legislature that they were doing so to protect the institution of slavery. And I can't believe that Lee owned no slaves. He had a big farm near DC and he couldn't run it by himself when he was on active duty before the war. That farm is now Arlington National Cemetary.

Yes, Lee's home was known as Arlington and was confiscated by the US govt. I never read Lee didn't own slaves.

I think it is well proven the war was about taxation of the southern states by the Yankees who had limited resources and was attempt to steal southern wealth from the selling of cotton as an example. Never mind who was picking the cotton, send us the bread.

It's time to stop fighting the war. Following Lincoln's plan for reconstruction, it also meant reconciliation. Grant and Lee had great respect for on another and became good friends. Most who fought on the side of the South did not own slaves and were fighting for their homes. Prior to the Civil War, the states were superior to the federal government. This is based on the ninth and tenth amendments, stating that the powers of the federal government were few and enumerated, and anything not given to the federal government nor specifically denied to the states were reserved to the states and the people.
