As I'm sure you know, there are people on the right calling tax-funded services, socialism. Of course, this is just as much rhetoric as anything else, I understand that but the reason why that rhetoric works is because tax-funded services ARE based on a principle tenant of socialism... "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs".

Now, if you're suggesting there is a difference, may I point out that you missed it? First of all, a "state owned and run commerce" is impossible because once something is owned by the state it is by definition no longer commercial. But I think I know what you mean to say...

Even so, a tax-funded service is funded because it functions in a mixed economy where public interest and commerce transact. In other words, there is probably more difference in the various implementations of socialism than there is in the superficial difference you are drawing between "fine" and "disaster".

Also, if you want to follow the line that's been drawn by many others between "funding" and "operations" as the distinguishing factor, bear in mind that ALL those thin lines... the Police, Fire, Emergency Response, the military... they are all owned AND OPERATED by the state and with that said, here is my response to your point... No, "state-owned and run commerce" does NOT always end in disaster as proven by a wide range of state owned and operated services such as the USPS, the USDA and the USMC.
