Conservative and Liberal have wider meaning than simply political- They speak to a WAY of thinking about the world around us. However, the teachings of, say, 'turn the other cheek', 'you are your brother's keeper', 'judgement is mine sayeth the Lord', 'He who is without sin shall cast the first stone', 'Love thy neighbor as thy self', the rich man and the eye of the needle and such are examples of a pretty liberal bias- to say the least!
Example:
10000 years ago a bunch of kids ware playing out in the veldt. A rustle of grass, a flash of yellow and >POOF< Ignatz is gone!

After that a couple of those children ran like hell whenever the grass rustled- a pretty good survival strategy (conservatively) assuming that what has come before will likely come again. Quite reasonable.

Some others, with the identical experience, might check it out instead- perhaps finding it to be only a zephyr of wind this time, a flock of birds perhaps or a tasty antelope. More risk perhaps but also maybe more to gain.

We all sit somewhere along that line. Other bio-forms that become overly conservative- less open to novelty, finally less adaptable- go extinct as their environment (inevitably) changes.

Conservativism slows change, which can be advantageous in a culture too ready to disregard all traditional beliefs, whereas Progressivism is inherently innovative- sometimes with wonderful results but sometimes not.

There is a constant dialogue which is to be nurtured- not reviled.

Politically, Conservatism is the authoritarian branch with the dogmatic rules of conduct. More homogenous culture, more centralized and inherited power, less interested in individualism, say civil rights, xenophobia. Us and Them.

Liberalism, on the other hand, is more about individual freedoms, embracing 'different', and produces societies, as our own, based on such unlikely utopian idealism as is prominent in our Bill of Rights, our Constitution.

These comments merely flesh out a little the dictionary definitions of the two words.

A couple of points about Your Reply:

First, your "Example" of 10,000 years ago had Conservatives run away, never face the Unknown & Liberals stay and face the Unknown... So Why Do Conservatives Demand Their Constitutional Right to Defend Themselves With Arms if We Will Simply run away - BECAUSE WE WON'T & NEVER HAVE - Conservatives HAVE ALWAYS FACED THE UNKNOWN!!!

Second, Conservatives ARE More Dogmatic when it comes to THE Rules of Conduct... Like the USA Constitution... AND WE'RE PROUD OF IT!!! Liberals Are Dogmatic to THEIR Rules of Conduct... Interpreting Whatever Laws They Like & DisCarding Any Laws They Dislike (like placing restrictions on owning and using firearms when the 2nd Amendment says "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed" - and trust me, restrictions ARE infringements)...

The historians and government officials I quoted were not Christians or theologians, nor did they ever convert to Christianity.

They were telling the truth as they had witnessed it.

The Bible tells us the stars were put in the sky as signs. They tell the story in God's video that the Bible tells, the story of our redemption through Christ.

During the great apostasy against God in Babylon, after Noah's flood, the false Astrological religion Nimrod established, while building the Tower of Babel, gave new perverse meanings for the planets and constellations, changing their meaning from what had originally been understood.

Matthew, James, Jude, Peter and Paul all wrote in the New Testament, and all were eye witnesses to Jesus crucifixion and resurrection.

There were 500 eye witnesses who saw Jesus after his resurrection.

Why do you suppose the Sanhedrin could not stop the new faith before it exploded? Don't you think they tried?

It's impossible to unconvince people who were eye witnesses.
You can't be this blind, Nickolai, without seeking... (show quote)

The witnesses to the resurrection were all in the story there were no independent witnesses outside the story. Therefore that information would not be admissible in a court of law. It's hear say. For a story to be believed it must have evidence and first hand witness. To say I heard there were 500 witnesses isn't good enough that's why we call it faith. The origins of they can't seem to get their facts straight.

Some of the details of the life of Jesus are based on mistranslations of the Hebrew scripture. Jesus crucifixion on Passover defies believability yet makes perfect sense metaphorically. Claims are made that contradicts the historical record. Were it not for Paul there wouldn't be a Christian religion. The earliest writings of Paul and others contain no details of his life.

There was not a single writing about Jesus from Jesus or about him during his alleged lifetime. Philo a Jewish writer who lived from around 20 B.C.E. to 50 C.E. wrote extensively about the political and theological movements around the Mediterranean, and his views foreshowed Christian Theology, yet he never once wrote anything about Jesus. Not only this but he wrote about political conflicts between the Jews and Pontius Pilot. Now one one would think with all the fantastical super natural miricles being performed by the central character in our allegorical tale as told by the gospel writers, word would have sprerad like wildfire all round the Known world The biggest news of the day but who knew.

The Bible was Translated from Hebrew into Arabic, Greek, and Latin. The Roman Catholic Church created the Bible and for a thousand each copy was hand written by Benidictine Monks in Monostaries. Catholics made purely theological argumentrs as to why Jesus existed in the flesh. In the end we have only one source of information about the life of Jesus Christ. The Gospels.

I do not believe in the creed professed by the Jewish Church, by the Roman Church, by the Greek Church, by the Turkish Church, by the Protestant Church, nor by any Church that I know of. My own mind is my own Church. [Thomas Paine, The Age of Reason]

Whenever we read the obscene stories, the voluptuous debaucheries, the cruel and tortuous executions, the unrelenting vindictiveness with which more than half the Bible is filled, it would be more consistant that we call it the word of a demon than the word of God. It is a history of wickedness that has served to corrupt and brutalize mankind; and, for my part, I sincerely detest it, as I detest everything that is cruel. [Thomas Paine, The Age of Reason]

Absolutely not true. Fragments of the Book of Daniel (Dead Sea Scrolls) affirm that books of the Bible predate the foundation of Roman Catholicism by centuries--i.e., Book of Daniel dated 2nd Century B.C. The Bible is a continuum of books written by 42 authors over a period of 1500 years. (By comparison, the Qu'ran is the work of one man during one lifetime).

In 1553, Mary Tudor (Bloody Mary), at age 16 ascended to the throne of England, married the Catholic king of Spain, and, determined to force the English people back to Roman Catholicism, ordered all English Bibles burned and began the persecution (execution) of Protestants. This persecution forced Protestants to flee to Northern Europe (Belgium and the Netherlands). A group of some of the world's finest Protestant theologians and Bible scholars, including William Whittingham, John Calvin, and John Knox, assembled in Geneva and began the task of producing an English translation based wholly on the original texts in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. The Geneva Bible was published in 1599.

The Geneva translation's revolutionary impact can better be appreciated by the realization that the Bible has only been available to laymen for 400 years. Prior to the printing of Luther's German Bible in 1534 and the Geneva Bible In 1599, everyday believers, regardless of nationality, never had a Bible of their own to read and study. The Church and kings kept all but clergy and Latin scholars from reading Scripture; (known as the "Chained Bible" because they were chained to the pulpits) In England it even became, by royal edict, a capital crime even to read the Bible in the "vulgar tongue."

The publishing of the Geneva Bible changed all that. Intended for the masses, it was printed in book form rather than the huge and heavy works used by the clergy; It was the first"study" Bible in that it included copious marginal notes and footnotes by the theologians (translators)--these footnotes are decidedly anti-Catholic and are most eloquent in challenging the authority of earthly monarchs. When the Geneva Bible began to circulate among the people of England, King James was royally offended, particularly by the challenges to his authority as found in the notes, so he commissioned the KJV. Omitting the offending footnotes, The KJV is a close copy of the Geneva Bible--although there are much more accurate translations of specific words and meanings in the Geneva Bible.

The Geneva Bible has the distinct honor of being the only Bible brought to America by the Pilgrims and is the Bible of our Founding Fathers. In fact, George Washington funded a subscription to make this Bible available to Americans.

Furthermore, it is impossible to lend any credibility to an atheistic interpretation of the Bible. The truth therein transcends the intellect, and atheists unvariably attempt to use Bible passages and Biblical truth based solely on preconceived biases and opinions, IOW, they can find what they are looking for, but not what is actually there. The spititual channel to understanding is closed to them.

"Now, Faith is the grounds of things which are hoped for, and the evidence of things which are not seen . . . . . Through Faith we understand that the world was ordained by the Word of God, so that the things which we see are not made of things which do appear." Hebrews 11

Your selective quotes by Thomas Paine do not support your argument, he was in France, deeply involved in the French Revolution, when he wrote that "pamphlet". His philosphy of Deism is deeply flawed in that it is entirely self-centered.

Let me clarify. Yes the old testament existed and was called the Torah the Hebrew Bible. Modern Scientific Archaeology and the absence of historic proof have revealed the first four books of the Old Testament to be complete fabrications. Ancient Egyptian history is written in hieroglyphics in and on the walls ceilings columns of the palaces tombs and Temples of Egypt and there is no record of 600,000 Jewish slaves living in Egypt or leaving or of the Red Sea opening up and swallowing an Egyptian army. Christianity in its early years was little more than a cult and existed in scattered areas around the Mediterranean,

until Emperor Constantine adopted It as the official religion of Rome, for political purposes (the battle of Milvian bridge) . and based on the myth of Mithra who was crucified between 600 and 400 BCE. Crucifixiations were popular in achient times. Some 16 mythical Crucifixiations of Godsh occured before Christ and most were born of a virgin, about half on Dec25th.

There were many religions in Rome in 325, too many in fact. A council was called to amalgate the many religionsoman Empire into one. Christianity plagerized older myths and legends and horistorized them to suit the Roman Catholic Currch while combining religions existing at the time (Krishna, Horus, Osorian. Ises, Baal, Ishtar and many others for unity and to stop all the conflicts between numerous religions. This all took place at the council of Nicaea in 325. At first siome claimed the new religion was fiction and Christ was a fiction but they did prevail.

Euesbius (bishop of Caeserea in Palistine) arranged for scribes to produce fifty copies of what was called the new testimonies. This was the first mention of the New Testament. Constintine then decreed that the New Testomonies thereafter would be called the word of the Roman Saviour and that any earlier manuscripts be burnt and the records of the council be burnt and that any man found concealing writtings be stricken off at the shoulders. (beheaded) This New Testament was the official book of the new united religion of Constitine not the Bible. All other bgooks were to be burned; that would include the Torah/ Old Testament.

In 391 Emporer Theodosius ordered the destruction of all pagan temples; Ultimately there Library of Alexandria was burned by Religious fanatics. The Church admits that the Gospels do not go back to the first century of the Christian era. What about Tacitus Roman Historian who wrote about the percecutions of early Christians? These writtings were discovered in the forest's of Germany following a reward for offered by Leo X for old writtings, and following a history of forgeries in Catholicism. Pope Leo X called Christ a fable I stand by my claim that the New Testament was hand written by Benedictine Monks for over a thousand years and the laity was forbiden to read the books and had to rely on the priest to tell them what it said untill the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenburg publishing the Gutenburg Bible in 1452.

The printing press became an indispensible tool of the reformers beginning in Germany with Luther's Sola Scripture in the 15 th century. Sparking the Reformation and the religious wars of the15 th and 16 th centuries. Secular interpertations of the Bible are based on the historical and archeological record as the facts and evidence indicate. Faith is based on hope's and dreams in the absdence of all evidence. And is a creation of the minds of men in an attempt to explain the wonders of nature and the natural world with supper natural myth's.

Neither type has had an original idea in hundreds (perhaps thousands) of years. Yet it's specifically because they are so stubbornly attached to a few very old ideas that they cause so much trouble. Simply put, they have great difficulties with change. But since change is the only constant in the Universe, that puts them in a prickly position: at odds with reality, and at war with the world.

As it turns out, one of the most important unique characteristics of our species, Homo sapiens, is the ability, willingness and, indeed, evolutionary advantage, of discarding established traditions and institutions in favor of something potentially much better. Thus, through discovery, learning, behavior change, experimentation, innovation, and (perhaps most importantly) cooperation, emerges progress. Yet each of the momentous advances in human culture were argued against by those in the tribe who wished to cling to the old values, the old myths. These are the conservatives. Thankfully, they eventually lose most of these arguments.

This very same tale continues throughout human history. We see social conservatives in every culture around the world and through the ages tenaciously clinging to hoary, old myths and customs, only to eventually be swept aside by the inexorable tide of the true human spirit: the impetus toward discovery and growth. Conservatives were the last to give up loyalty to Zeus, Thor and the Flat Earth. Many of them still think the world is 6,000 years old, and want to teach this in public school. Often the collision between the old guard and advanced thinking turns violent. We see this in the crucifixion of Jesus, the American Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and Taliban Afghanistan. In these conflicts, guess who is the villain... yep, it's always the conservatives... those who desperately want to hold on to the bad, old ways!

Conservatives are highly suspicious of social or economy-shifting technologies and paradigms. The conservative aristocracy fought against the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, even the Industrial Revolution. And never forget they were against the American Revolution Conservatives were against public education, Native American rights, emancipation of the slaves, women's suffrage, and civil rights for all. They balked at the horseless carriage, the computer and the internet, and today scorn environmentally-friendly industries, renewable energy, policies to reverse global warming, and more efficient light bulbs... all in defense of their increasingly obsolete ways of life. Despite their howls of protest, however, though it may take time, in almost every case, the more innovative, progressive, technology and ideology wins out.

It's a bit strange that these relics of the bad-old days are even still around. It would seem logical that by now they would have learned the lessons of history and gotten on board the wondrous train of progress. But rationality is not a property abundantly present in conservative ideology. Indeed, to the makers and believers of myths, rationality is not a "traditional" value. Not that conservatives are necessarily stupid (though John Stuart Mill maintained that most stupid people are conservative). Indeed the myth-makers of the dominator hierarchy are diabolically clever.

The myth makers are very differant than the myth belivers. They do not usually believe their myths because they know they made them up, and they know exactly how self-serving they are. So they continue to spout them over and over and over again, hoping that a certain segment of the public will gulp them down hook, line and sinker. They are hardly ever disappointed. There is never any shortage of gullible myth-believers out there, hankering for a fat myth that satisfies their appetite for selfishness, ignorance and fear.

The myth-believers remain willfully ignorant. It's easier to stay dumb about most things and allow gut feelings to rule. But broader knowledge and logic are not the only things missing from their mindset. Compassion, empathy and beyond-the-self/clan concern are likewise sorely lacking in the conservative worldview. Conservatives have a "me" rather than "we" orientation. Rather than rationality, rather than empathy, rather than true compassion, they defer to selfish emotionality, including strong currents of greed, fear and prejudice.

Under the threat of nuclear annihilation, sectarian strife, global warming, ecological catastrophe, exploding population, predatory capitalism and rampant consumerism, to survive as a species and bring peace to the planet, we must forge into an integrated and respectful human family, accelerate our discovery and nurturance of our commonalities and shared interests even while recognizing and celebrating our wonderful diversity. We must constrain those ideologies that promote division, distrust, greed, fear and self-assumed superiorities over the rest of humankind. Standing in stark and determined opposition to this higher evolution of humankind, as always, are the conservatives... and their myths
Conservatives come in many colors, but none of the... (show quote)

I am surprised that some people still use this hackneyed argument regarding the existence of Jesus Christ !

The Evidence For Jesus' Existence is Overwhelming.

The Bible has proven to be more historically and archaeologically accurate than any other ancient book. It has been subjected to the minutest scientific textual analysis possible to humanity and has been proven to be authentic in every way.

First, let me put it to you in a very academic historical fashion that is applied throughout the world using the cultural accumulation of knowledge and its development and transmission across generations by its practitioners and transmitters.

While historical revisionism is the re-examination of accepted secular history, with an eye towards updating it with newly discovered, more accurate, or less-biased information, "deniers" seek evidence to support a preconceived theory, omitting substantial facts.
Historical revisionism is a secular academic approach that holds that a given slice of history, as it has been traditionally told, may not be entirely accurate, and should hence be revised accordingly. Historical revisionism in this sense is a well-accepted and mainstream part of secular history studies, and it is applied to the study of ancient history as new facts emerge and change our understanding of it.

NOTE: Extraordinary Evidence About Jesus in the Dead Sea Scrolls
http://www.grantjeffrey.com/article/article1.htm

A very different process unfolds when someone proceeds from the premise that a major element of human history, such as Christ’s life on earth, His crucifixion and His resurrection is simply inaccurate, and ignores or routinely minimizes evidence that conflicts with that premise. History done in this way is not revisionism, but denial….. which is where you are at this point.

Lying cannot change the facts of history any more than your birth certificate cannot provide evidence that you once existed.

YOU OPINED: “The witnesses to the resurrection were all in the story there were no independent witnesses outside the story. Therefore that information would not be admissible in a court of law.” [sic]

~~~~ Simply put, that is totally FALSE !
You and Thomas Paine may certainly hold to your opinions about what you have read in the Scriptures and how you responded to those saving words from the position and perspective of your own spiritual status at the time. This can change, so keep reading.
Let’s look at a quick sketch of what God has said concerning the workings of faith as there are many people out there with misconceptions.
1. Who provides faith?
1 Corinthians 12:3 No one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.
2. Can we determine how it will happen?
JOHN 3:8 [JESUS]: “The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."
3. What methods does the Holy Spirit use?
ROMANS 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
4. What does faith consist of; what does it profit ?
ROMANS 10:9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
2 Corinthians 4
But if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case, the god of this age has blinded the minds of the unbelievers so they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ.
