I loved Gregory Peck's portrayal of Ahab in the movie. He made a sympathetic character of him.

I did, I did. The end of the book is masterful. Ismael, the Narrator is the only survivor of Moby Dick's attack. He is floating on his friend's coffin in the ocean. Another Whaling ship, the Rachael, which Ahab had refused to help look for some of their missing sailors, spots him. " It was the devious-cruising Rachel, that in her retracing search after her missing children, only found another orphan. "

I remember Moby Dick well too I read it, and Black Beauty (the actual classics) in 2nd grade. I read slower then, so those two books were engraved on my mind My grandpa wouldn't have "nonsense" books around the house, and I had my tonsils out in December, so there ya go
I actually liked the character Qe Queg. And we had a stray dog in the neighborhood who I'd give my lunch to at the bus stop every morning who I named Ishmael

1956. It is weird to see Gregory Peck play a villain, but he was amazing. Here is a clip. Even in death Captain Ahab has no fear. Only rage.

I can see why the book is not read much in modern times. I found parts of it difficult. To me the characters and the plot are everything. There are many chapters I would have left out. Perhaps the author wanted to record the whaling industry for history, but there were a lot of boring details. However, the important parts are great.

The friendship between Ishmael and Quee Quegg is well written. One thing I loved about the movie is that it was true to the book. Many movies are not. I never read Black Beauty.

Until I read the original Dracula, I had no idea how bad the vampire movies I grew up on were. Also the original Frankenstein novel bears no resemblance to the old 1930s Frankenstein movies.

Very true. Black Beauty is an EXCELLENT book, written from the horse's perspective and still works. Some interesting commentary in there about people. (PS Dont read the chapter "Poor Ginger" )
I did read the original Frankenstein. I never read Dracula.
I think the details in a lot of books are about setting the scene Tho you're right, some authors get carried away with it Heidi was like that. Tho by the time you finished the book you wanted to go live on top of a mountain and drink goat's milk LOL.

In the movies the Frankenstein monster was a stupid mountain of muscle. In the book he is very intelligent. When I read the book and the setting began in the Arctic, I was amazed because none of the movie versions even hinted at that.

As an anti hero he is similar to Ahab, Wolf Larsen the Villain in the Sea Wolf, and Milton's Satan. Uncompromising and fearless.

People do read more broadly speaking, you can check that out the same way I did, by asking at the book shop and library, it's mainly only the conversationalists that have to find short cuts for knowledge accruement or give up on conversations.

It's become terribly competitive but what can you do, if you really want to make out you got the gift of the gab and rake in the benefits every second is crucial to be accessing extra knowledge, reading is not a dichotomy, listening to lectures is, and there is the added advantage, if your doing something else while listening to a lecture on the internet, it's less likely you're going to fall asleep.
