If all the states followed the same rules of voter registration it would help.
Proof of residence, tax payments, birth certificate, naturalize, etc.

Before we get to the Electoral College, can we talk about Alexander Hamilton?

As a political figure, Hamilton was volatile, mercurial, choleric, vindictive, conniving, disloyal, and incontinent; those personal flaws eventually led to his death in a duel with Aaron Burr. We remember him because he was also smart, creative, dashing, and decisive. And if you’d had a case in front of a New York court, he’d have been the lawyer to hire. Brilliant doesn’t do justice to his advocacy skills.

But an advocate is what he was. If he were a car salesman today, he could convince you that you really don’t want the backup camera in your family minivan, because this baby here knows not to back into walls.

It’s in that context that we should read his panegyric, from “Federalist No. 68,” to the “mode of appointment of the chief magistrate of the United States” by the electors, a “small number of persons, selected by their fellow-citizens from the general mass, [who] will be most likely to possess the information and discernment requisite to such complicated investigations.” The electors, he assured us, will be “men most capable of analyzing the qualities adapted to the station, and acting under circumstances favorable to deliberation, and to a judicious combination of all the reasons and inducements which were proper to govern their choice.”

Oh, "Hamilton was volatile, mercurial, choleric, vindictive, conniving, disloyal, and incontinent."
That's even insulting someone unable to defend themselves.
The Electoral College prevents the USA from the west coast and northeast from total control in our elections.
Now, if we could control all these people moving to our states and voting for the same type of government they ran from.
Turning into the same crap holes they came from, such as Broward County, FL.

The population of California is 39,557,045. There are 23 states that their total population combined do not equal California's. There are 7 states with less than a million population. Without the Electoral College, California's vote could over ride the vote from these 23 states. That's the reason our founding fathers came up with the electoral college. So this would not happen. Of course the Democrats would like to see this happen. If would mean they would not have to steal any more votes and they would win every national election.

The Constitution doesn't need a lot of tinkering with.

Keeping it intact and original is not a bad thing.

Changing anything could end up bad.
My opinion.

Prohibition proved that, if anything, our Constitution is too easy to tinker with.

You might want to work on your math/addition skills....

https://www.enchantedlearning.com/usa/states/population.shtml

Bottom 23 + District of Columbia...

28. Oklahoma 3,930,864
29. Connecticut 3,588,184
30. Iowa 3,145,711
31. Utah 3,101,833
32. Arkansas 3,004,279
33. Nevada 2,998,039
34. Mississippi 2,984,100
35. Kansas 2,913,123
36. New Mexico 2,088,070
37. Nebraska 1,920,076
38. West Virginia 1,815,857
39. Idaho 1,716,943
40. Hawaii 1,427,538
41. New Hampshire 1,342,795
42. Maine 1,335,907
43. Rhode Island 1,059,639
44. Montana 1,050,493
45. Delaware 961,939
46. South Dakota 869,666
47. North Dakota 755,393
48. Alaska 739,795
49. District of Columbia 693,972
50. Vermont 623,657
51. Wyoming 579,315

Barring my own possible errors, that adds up to 44,748,780...over 5 million more than California. Your point is taken, but your math appears flawed.

It would be unconstitutional to removing the electoral college for it will deny the rest of the 50 states from the electoral process. If you use popular votes, only NY, California, and Chicago could decide the election. The 47 states are disenfranchised. It is unconstitutional. The Founding Fathers in 1789, who framed the constitution and requiring the electoral college were brilliant thus now the deciding factor. A presidential candidate can win both the popular vote and the electoral college. But when a presidential candidate has more electoral college votes than the other, then the candidate with higher electoral votes win the election.
Presidents who won via the majority of electoral votes.
1888 Benjamin Harrison 233/401
2000 George W. Bush 271/538
2016 Donald Trump 304/538

In 2016 Hillary Clinton had edge on the popular votes of 2.6 million. It was also found that millions were illegal votes from California alone. There were many other states that illegal votes were cast for Clinton.
Many states had more votes than registered voters. The dead voted also.

The whole purpose of the E.C. was to keep a few populous states from dominating the election for POTUS. Look at states such as New Mexico (where my son lives) or Kalifornica, or Taxachuttes, or others too numerous to mention. In those states just a small number (In NM, IMS, 3) urban areas completely overbalance the entire rest of the state. Kalifornica is another example. Remove L.A., S.F. (+silicon valley), S.D., and Sacramento and you essentially have a red state.

Oh, and regarding the 2016 election, by the most conservative (and by that I do NOT mean politically conservative) estimates the number of fraudulent votes cast in the '16 election was more than TWICE Hillary's alleged popular margin. If you eliminated all the deader votes, illegal immigrant votes and other fraudulent votes, Hillary lost the POPULAR vote by an even GREATER margin than her alleged "winning" popular margin.

"Halfrican"? Oh, you mean "the Kenyan" ("I was there when he was born" Obama's Grandmother is supposed to have said.)
