That's not exactly true. It depends on the message being sent. President Trump ran on the issue of the economy and US debt. By taking a low salary, he was stating that he would fight the debt we're placing on our future generations as well as showing his intent to be a servant of the public. I find this a very honorable thing. Why is doing a good thing never good enough for you?

His foundation was used to purchase portraits of himself or a statue and never done a thing for charity to the world.

President Donald Trump continues to maintain his campaign promise to donate his $400,000 annual White House salary with U.S. government agencies.
In August, a White House spokesman announced that Trump donated $100,000, his second-quarter salary, to the U.S. Surgeon General's office.
"I donate 100% of my President's salary, $400,000, back to our Country, and feel very good about it!" Trump tweeted Aug. 16.
His first-quarter salary in 2019 went to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Trump donated his third quarter salary for 2018 to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Trump's older brother Fred Jr. died after struggling from alcoholism in 1981.
The president donated his 2018 fourth quarter salary to the Department of Homeland Security and has donated to various federal entities during his time in office, including the National Park Service, the Department of Education and the Veterans Administration.

Meanwhile how many foreign diplomats and business people have forked over $200k to join Mar A Lago for the face time, the Saudi's booked a whole floor of a struggling hotel for an extended time, they weren't even using the rooms. Kushner got hundreds of millions in loans from Qatar when nobody else would make a loan because the project was a horrible investment. This presidential salary is chump change considering what Trump is making back.

He did not contribute anything to his foundation, he "gave away" people's money who had contributed to it. And it remains to be seen what charges come from his personal misuse of foundation funds, it's pending.

He also claimed he would give the profits from foreign money coming into trump properties, but that went out the window because it was too complicated to figure profit versus gross receipts, and it could be anything he says it is anyway.

I admire and respect president Trump for donating his services free to the people of this country. Fact of the matter is, he does not really have to work. He has everything to enjoy his life. But witnessing that our country was going down the drain, after Obama's treacherous destruction, he run for president and he won.
