My family didn't arrive here until well after the civil war ended so how did I benefit from slavery?

Reparations has been brought up for decades, the only reason it is getting talked about now is because both sides will use it for motivation and then it will disappear again.

Nice of you to try to include the Republicans in the reparations game. Actually I haven't heard any Republicans touting reparations although I could have missed some. Reparations is a blatant ploy to get votes and nothing more. This is about as transparent as anything can get, yet the Dems keep bringing it up.
I'm sure our resident liberals on OPP will jump onto the wagon and start beating the drum for reparations. It never seems to fail and they will somehow proceed to blame conservatives for it. Some things never change.

Every country on this planet has had slaves and some still do the slaves are gone and the Dems think giving blacks money to buy their VOTE are you kidding. It's like when they say black aren't able to get an ID and if we require Id to vote they will be left out. That is so stupid black people are not simple they are not stupid oh they will take your money because they think Dems are stupid But I guarantee they aren't. And by the way, he wants everyone to do a dna test I don't think so its my paranoia kicking in and it not rt to require everyone do a test what they dug up everyone who owned a slave need they forget the Chinese or the Irish that were slaves. And it ok to have to give money to a black man who's worth 40 million he says.

The repugs will say that it is a give away and they need to stop the Dems. It will never come up for a vote, it is just talk.

You did not have to crack the whip to benefit, look at the history of USA.

Was the abolitionist crusade against slavery the product of a belief that slavery was an impediment to economic development?
Not in any simple sense. Williams was wrong to think that by the mid-nineteenth century slavery was a declining institution. Slavery was an economically efficient system of production, adaptable to tasks ranging from agriculture to mining, construction, and factory work. Furthermore, slavery was capable of producing enormous amounts of wealth. On the eve of the Civil War, the slave South had achieved a level of per capita wealth not matched by Spain or Italy until the eve of World War II or by Mexico or India until 1960. As late as the 1850s, the slave system in the United States was expanding and slave owners were confident about the future.

The institutions built during slavery still operating today benefit all. Banks, schools, insurance companies, industrial plants, all built upon slavery money. many still operating today, and all Americans benefit from those companies enriching the country.
