My grandparents came from Italy, both sides, fleeing World War 1.
They came here legally, broke, knowing no one. One eventually opened a grocery store, the other settled into a steel town. Both sets became prosperous, learned English quickly, and raised big families who went on to become prosperous as well. They came here for work and a better life, and yes, they maintained their religion, but I think they did it more as a social obligation than fervent beliefs.
Why did they choose America rather than some other country? Our Christian values and faith is what makes our nation prosperous.
