"FiOS (Fiber Optic Service)
by: Margaret Rouse

FiOS (Fiber Optic Service) is a fiber to the premises (FTTP) telecommunications service offered by Verizon to consumers in the United States. The word "fios" is Irish for "knowledge" and the FiOS acronym is a trademark of Verizon. FTTP, also called "fiber to the home" (FTTH), is the installation and use of optical fiber from a central point directly to individual buildings.

A typical FiOS package includes high-speed Internet access along with cable TV and basic telephone service. For consumer use, FiOS Internet access is available at downstream speeds of up to 30 megabits per second ( Mbps ) and upstream speeds of up to 5 Mbps. Verizon is building its FiOS network in most of the states where it offers landline communications services. As of early 2007 the bulk of the development activity was taking place in New York state, New Jersey and Connecticut although the pilot program began in Texas." This is old, the rates are much highernow

They replaced the metal conductors in cable and phone lines with Glass Fiber Conductors, which conduct light. It is ultra-reliable and achieves extremely high data transmission rates. My house phone, TV service and Internet are all supplied by Verizon FIOS. It is Superior service for about the same bucks.

The only drawback is that the phone no longer works on a central office battery and when the power goes out all access goes out. I bought a 12 Kilowatt generator and wired it in for auto start so it powers my entire house, including well pump, freezers, refrigerators, TV's and computer equipment. The generator is tri fuel powered, home heating oil, gasoline or propane. I have had two storm related, multi day, power outages and the FIOS Service was uninterrupted with my rig.

AuntiE had just returned to her home from an evening of church services when she was startled by an intruder.

She caught the man in the act of robbing her home of its valuables and yelled, "Stop! Acts 2:38!"

(Repent and be baptized, in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven.)

The burglar stopped in his tracks.

AuntiEcalmly called the police and explained what she had done.

As the officer cuffed the man to take him in, he asked the burglar, "Why did you just stand there? All the lady did was yell a scripture to you."

"Scripture?" replied the burglar. "She said she had an ax and two 38's!"

Sorry I don't have Verizon in my area either.
In Illinois Verizon sold out to Frontier.
Frontier's bills kept climbing up after they took over.
Now I am afraid of them. Right now their price is $47.99 a month plus state tax.
My only problem is can I trust them to not raise the rates after the 24 month contract.

That is always a problem with the second tier telephone companies. Verizon was one of the original seven dwarfs after the Ma Bell court mandated breakup so they still have some of the old time business practices derived from Ma Bell.

I'm illinois too. Seems all we can get up here in lib land is Comcast and at&t. I tried at&t and they were an even bigger rip off than Comcast. So right now I only pay internet, have a roku box for tv and only a cell phone.
