And Nixon to thank for the beginning of the latest round of fiat currency that lasts to this day. Our presidents have sure helped f*** things up.

I'm still on Democrats. The Republican pond scum will have to wait their turn. I will say that I don't see why Nixon needed 6 pallbearers at his funeral, there are only 2 handles on a trash can.

I think for some that they should install two wheels and one handles so it could be wheeled to the curb on garbage collection day.

If we could just get the garbage companies to accept that as trash. I know most of the ones I would put out would not be for recycling.

You missed the one about John Boehner? I'm waiting for him to declare as a Democrat, come out of the closet, as it were. I've heard people complain he needs to grow a pair, but first he needs to grow a backbone to hang them on. I'm not done with Democrats yet. I used to have to differentiate between Liberal and Conservative Democrats, but that is no longer necessary, since there are no longer and Conservative Dems left.

We could turn DC into a huge raised bed organic garden; Lord knows there's no shortage of bullshit for fertilizer.

Nixon put us finally on fiat currency, taking us completely off the silver standard. Even Obama can't top that, although he seems to be trying to find a way.

I am only 62 but I had a taste of what America was like before the coup d'état in 63. People were alive in that you had no idea what was going to come out of their mouths but it was going to be witty, funny or provoke thought. Every other person in my parents generation could play an instrument well. Social interaction was more than showing each other pictures of what you had for dinner. When the President spoke to the citizens it was with respect to all and down to none. Black musicians were the source for the most fascinating music you will ever hear not potty mouth nursery rhyme to a simple beat. In junior high you could obsess over the opposite sex without fear of offending anyone. Food was not as processed and family dinners happened every day. Musical artist earned there way to the top by popular demand not a platinum record deal done at Warner Brothers before anyone even knows who the artist is. I could go on and on but now is not the time to write a book. I would like to hear others talk about the qualities of life in America pre 1963.
I am only 62 but I had a taste of what America was... (show quote)

I'm 64 myself, so that means I was 13 in 1963. I think it was a simpler time. Of course, I was a kid so I wasn't aware of and could care less about world events are even things that were happening within the United States. I only cared about keeping up with my schoolwork so I wouldn't get in trouble with my parents and not be allowed to go outside and play.

I do remember certain things or at least I was oblivious to any major problems occurring in the country at that time. I grew up in what I later discovered was a very rough neighborhood. I wasn't aware of the neighborhood being a "bad" neighborhood it was just where I lived. I do remember there being certain bullies in the neighborhood that had a bad reputation but mostly that would consist of getting into fights with other kids. I don't remember there being a bunch of killings or shootings or stabbings just fistfights. I know that if there was a fistfight and someone actually pulled a knife that the entire crowd would turn on that person and called him "chicken shit" for pulling the knife. Pulling a gun was unheard of. So I guess I'm saying there was a sense of fairness even in physical altercations that does not exist today.

I also remember a whole different attitude towards school and the teachers. Where I grew up which was in a suburb of Memphis Tennessee if you got in trouble in school you also got in trouble at home. My parents and most of my friends parents attitude was that the teacher was always right. I wasn't aware of my parents or any of my friends parents going to the school and challenging the teacher's authority or the schools. I went to public school and corporal punishment was commonplace. One of the things that kept us in line was the fear, but mostly embarrassment, of being sent to the principal's office to receive "licks" given by the principal. "Licks" consisted of bending over and grabbing your ankles while the principal smacked your rear end with paddle usually three times and always pretty damn hard. The worst part of the punishment wasn't the licks but the embarrassment of having to go back into the classroom in front of all your friends and they knowing full well that you just get your ass whipped. I don't know if it was right or wrong but I do know that it was effective in keeping the kids in line.

So was all wonderfully good? No, but it was mostly good. Kids tried hard back then to try and do as good as they could in school and at least with me, I had my parents support. They would sit down and help me with homework, and we always had homework. They expected me to do the best I could do and there was no excuse for not trying hard.

So all in all, I think it was a much better time.
