A new surtax on the wealthy? The republican plan says so

What you state is true. When SS was created life expectancy was a lot less and it was thought that quite a few of the contributors wouldn't make it to the retirement age.

However, to say that those who now collect past the point of the amount they paid in are akin to welfare is disingenuous. It has been demonstrated many times that had the deductions been invested instead, the person would have far more funds available to them then what the total of the amount SS generally pays them from retirement until death.

Years ago, the government started tapping the SS trust fund to pay General bills... this has depleted the amount in the coffers that could have invested on behalf of payers. Also, SS is paid out to many other people, not just retirees.

One solution, though probably not a complete one, would be to remove the cap on SS tax to include all earned income. By doing that, they could probably lower the rate... which would benefit the lower and middle class workers.

Back to the original issue... raising taxes on the wealthy. As said, we need to compromise... Republicans need to be more flexible with tax revenues and Democrats need to let go of some of the social program spending.

Also, the biggest item in budget is defense spending. I have no problem with it being reduced... cutting waste would be the first step. Cutting wages for the lower ranks particularly is ridiculous. Procurement policies are abysmal and should be streamlined.

One thought though...if we reduce the ranks of the military, where are they supposed to find jobs in an economy with a true unemployment rate of 15%? So we will shift paying some of these people from the military budget to the unemployment/welfare budgets?

I think the entire budget needs to be trimmed from top to bottom. We have built a system with a lot of pork in it... that once added, never goes away. It is great to fund arts and such, but if we are having to continually borrow to make ends meet, we should be removing these types of niceties. When we are doing better again, then we can reconsider them again.

One thing is certain, YOU will never have to worry about paying taxes.

You actually have to be gainfully employed, and not a teapartyconservative sucking out SS and Medicare

people on ss paid paid all their working lives on ss and they have paid since 65 for medicare and they die paying medicare so dont get them confused with welfare shit.
you said something about cuts let start with mammy getting pg once after that their hers we dont have to give her any more money.now that would stop the making babies for money.
another is cut housing subsidies in half along with food stamps and then eventually do away with food stamps and give them surplus food.then they pay for their cell phone like the rest of us.

hey ss is not welfare people and their employers both pay into it.now welfare is something that is not earned and people have been on it for generations but now they get housing and food stamps and even cell phones and they dont do anything its time to make them go to work .

You are right! SS is not welfare. Good luck getting someone on housing and food stamps to find a job that would pay them enough to pay for housing and food.
