If there had been no civil war or if it had ended in a stalemate or a southern victory would slavery still be practiced today?

If you have done any independent study of American history, then you are aware that slavery was on its way out.
Most of the founding fathers shared a common problem. What to do about the "negro." Indeed, Thomas Jefferson was very outspoken on the issue. Despite what he wrote in the Declaration, he did not think Blacks were equal to Whites, noting that “in general, their existence appears to participate more of sensation than reflection.” He hoped slavery would be abolished some day, but “when freed, he (the Negro) is to be removed beyond the reach of mixture.”

James Madison agreed with Jefferson that the only solution to the race problem was to free the slaves and expel them: “To be consistent with existing and probably unalterable prejudices in the U.S. freed blacks ought to be permanently removed beyond the region occupied by or allotted to a White population.” He proposed that the federal government buy up the entire slave population and transport it overseas. After two terms in office, he served as chief executive of the American Colonization Society, which was established to repatriate Blacks.

Benjamin Franklin asked a very sincere question, "Why increase the Sons of Africa, by Planting them in America?"

Even John Jay voiced his opinion, “Providence has been pleased to give this one connected country to one united people, a people descended from the same ancestors, speaking the same language, professing the same religion, attached to the same principles of government, very similar in their manners and customs."

Now keep in mind, in 1770, 40 percent of White households in Manhattan owned Black slaves, and there were more slaves in the colony of New York than in Georgia. And although I think that New Yorkers are fine individuals, they are for the most part liberals. Even those claiming to be supporters of the Abolition Movement, there was an issue. For they resisted the idea of complete equality, specifically interracial marriages. There were no fewer than 165 anti-abolition riots in the North during the 1820s alone... and at the core was the issue of marriage. So, even they wanted a better solution. And that solution was colonize them.

Henry Ward Beecher, brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe who wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin, expressed the majority view: “Do your duty first to the colored people here; educate them, Christianize them, and then colonize them.”

Henry Clay, when asked the purpose for his group the American Colonization Society responded with “rid our country of a useless and pernicious, if not dangerous portion of the population.” The following prominent Americans were not just members but served as officers of the society: James Madison, Andrew Jackson, Daniel Webster, Stephen Douglas, William Seward, Francis Scott Key, Winfield Scott, John Marshall, and Roger Taney. James Monroe, another President who owned slaves, worked so tirelessly in the cause of “colonization” that the capital of Liberia is named Monrovia in recognition of his efforts.

Our founders were smart and correct on so many issues, so what happened? Liberals happened, and with most things they control, they made a big stinking mess. What they elected to do was make generation after generations of blacks not only very unhappy, but have kept the vast majority of blacks in poverty. Of course they had to first initiate a war that killed more than 250,000 southern men and boys. Not to mention bankrupting the South. Among other war crimes perpetrated against women and children, not only the white...but the Blacks that remained loyal to their homes.

In my opinion, the worst mistake we have made, and this includes exploding the bomb on Japan, was to import Africans. From the start, they were unsuited for a developing n,tion and of course slavery was wrong. This begs the question, if they had been repatriated to Africa or given their own lands, would they now be better adjusted and happy?

This was a long reply, but a simple yes or no would have been inadequate. If you want to know more about the myths about slavery or the Northern Aggression, which was simple extortion by the North on the South, let me know.

Tea,

Are my comments difficult to follow (does not make sense)? If so, I am sorry, it is not my intent.
I do have scanned documents from the National Library to back up my quotes, should you need. Let me know how I can improve my comments in style or substance. Many thanks.

I honestly do not know the name of the first slave, because the records did not always include their status.
Many of the original blacks arrived in 1619, but their status is recorded as "indentured servants." I do however,
know the name of the first slave holder or owner, he was an Angolan who adopted the European name of Anthony Johnson. He was sold to slave traders in 1621 by an enemy tribe in his native Africa, and was registered as “Antonio, a Negro” in the official records of the Colony of Virginia. It may be that slavery was established when he brought suite in 1664, he brought a case before Virginia courts in which he contested a suit launched by one of his indentured servants, a Negro who adopted the name of John Casor. Johnson won the suit and retained Casor as his servant for life, who thus became the first official and true slave in America.

Got it, I'm a history buff also. Before I forget there is a site I found the other day you might like. It's called "IsraelUnwired.Com". Has some really great short videos and news articles. You probably already know about it but it was new to me.

Don, that was nice of you to say, but, it isn't true. You have probably forgotten more than I will ever know. Especially about cars, real estate, insurance, guns, etc... together we might give PL a foot race for a quarter mile, after that we'd fade fast I'm afraid. She doesn't sleep, even when she is asleep, always soaking up knowledge like a sponge. I would not want to play trivia pursuit with her.

Peewee, you know this is not true. I learn something new everyday from both you and Don. Of course, as Don pointed out, Linda is far more knowledgeable on history than I... not to mention Loki who knows so much about a variety of subjects... and I would be amiss if I did not mention Poppa...... and so many more. In fact, I put myself in the bottom third of posters on OPP.

Well, I'm still learning who is who on OPP, I think you and Don have both been on here longer than me. I had started a list of who the naughty and nice were but I've misplaced it. I just know who I enjoy the most and those I now skip unless they really upset me. Yes, Loki is much sharper than me, most people are, but Poppa is a hoot, he drops those pearls of wisdom and a poke in the ribs at just the right moment. The nice list is a lot longer than the naughty. I love the humor and teasing most of all, then the learning and sharing. Compliments are like cookies, I don't give them to everyone, but if you don't like cookies I'll cut back to thumbs up. I guess living in TX so long I've gotten into the habit of making things bigger and more interesting than they really are just for entertainment purposes. Personalities take a little longer to learn. I usually put people into two categories, warm and fuzzy or cold and prickly. Most remain unlabeled because they don't ever show who they really are. I just prefer friends over acquaintances.
