If 45% could not speak English, how could they get gainful employment? Therefore all these Mexicans or Hispanics, are all free loaders. If they even work, the jobs are not enough to support their so many children to feed. They make so many babies adding cost to schools, and food stamps, medical care, etc. Are they really so stupid being unable to learn English? They are just right next door and they could not speak English? Disgusting!!

That's because they don't need to. Look at New York--It took decades for many to assimilate there. My family is from New Mexico and my grandmother never spoke a word of English. People who don't need to speak a second language don't learn it. The question I have is why are you so surprised...

It's my understanding (from my German grandmother) that English, especially for an immigrant, is very difficult to learn. To her dying day she could never understand why
"knife" wasn't pronunced "kuh-nife." In NYC (where my old man grew up) Jews from Europe--especially those from Tsarist Russia--tended to congregate together since they were in a new and unfamiliar land. It seems to me it was only natural for them to do so. They were w/ fellow immigrants from the same geographical area and could speak Russian or Yiddish. They could even read a Hebrew newspaper. But in the long run, they would wind up speaking "broken English." Most wanted to learn the language, many (in my family's case) Anglicized (changed) their name from foreign spelling or pronunciation to English. The Goldwassers, for example, became the Goldwaters. Schmidt became Smith. Even Muellar became Muller though the spelling was the same as in the old country. There were also many foreign language radio stations where an immigrant could still hear his native tongue spoken or listen to familiar folk music. To my knowledge, all wanted to assimilate, to become "Americans" which is in stark contrast to many Muslims who now come to us from the ME. In case some you have forgotten this little tidbit, following the Civil War, most of the soldiers in the US Army were immigrants, chiefly from Ireland and Germany/Prussia.

So, in answer to your question I'm not a bit surprised. What sticks in my craw is those who now come here illegally. LIBDEMS can label them "undocumented workers" all they want; to me, they're illegal immigrants...and in many cases, do not wish to assimilate. Those are the ones I want to deport!
