But 32 million adults in the U.S. can't read. That's 14 percent of the population.
The problem in the U.S. is not one of language per se, but of lack of education.

Does that 32 million include i******s? I do agree about the lack of education. Our educational system is shameful. I blame most of it on the teachers unions.

Unfortunately, Noraa, my research did not differentiate between U.S. Citizens and undocumented foreign nationals, so it's impossible to answer your question.
My gut tells me though, that there is a 50/50 chance they are not included. Undocumented foreign nationals, especially adults, exist largely outside the system that measures such things, so likely are not included. On the other hand, if there are a large number of undocumented foreign nationals enrolled in schools AND the schools were used to gather these statistics, then they would be included. One needs more information to decide.
I agree our educational system is mostly shameful. This particular article ranks the U.S. #7 overall. Certainly not the worst in the world, but not what one would expect from the world's richest democracy.
http://www.usnews.com/news/best-countries/best-educationPersonally, I think it is much too complex a problem to blame on any one group. By and large I think our pre-college teachers are heroes, working for next to nothing and with sub-standard tools. Generally I think they teach because they care very much for the future of our kids. Something I cannot say with equal enthusiasm for our local governments and tax-distribution system.

I agree most of the teachers use to care for the future of our kids and some still do, but I think more than most are more concerned about their own future. They also want to teach kids their morals more than the sciences.

Good response! It really ticks me off to be asked if I want to hear something in Spanish or English. This is my country where English has been the national language for more than two hundred years. If they won't speak English send them home. As a matter of fact, just send them home anyway.

Exactly! I thought you were suppose to know or learn English to become a citizen. Am I wrong?

Most of them do not care a whit about the children, they're unionized and protected about almost everything they do. A few still care, but too few to count.

Obviously there is a problem there but I don’t care and that’s not what I’m talking about or referring to.
English should be the only language they are using in the schools too...
If they elect to learn another one fine but they need to speak and use English to communicate and get around in our World, read, write, thrive.
