Guns keep you safe?

I survived 37 years in da Bronx, and some very harrowing situations, without a gun. Just lucky, I guess. What I will say next is not meant to comment on anyone else but simply a review of my personal experiences. Again, blessing or luck, a gun was never needed.

I have had, through no merit of my own I feel (seriously), a great trust in God. Self-protection or -defense has never escalated beyond being alert and clear-thinking. I am capable physically yet hardly a match for bigger opponents. I was left to often ponder if it was this trust in God, not weapons of any sort, that had safeguarded me in those nearly four decades in high crime areas. As at least three of my stories about hostile encounters will bring immediate skepticism as to veracity or perhaps selective memory, even with two friends to testify, as luck would have it I suggest that the trust in a gun for protection is a vote against divine protection. However, lacking such protection as a firearm may not always be how God wants us to respond. Answering such a question is far beyond my limited human reasoning. And there is a season for everything under the sun.

It seems that I have been blessed or cursed with a natural pacifist bent. Stories abound in my extended family about me trying to be the peace-maker: I never quite understood what could possibly be exceptional about this propensity. Leaving my college deferment to volunteer for the draft is a good example but one I have stated too often and do not care to go into at this time. Suffice to say that a consciousness of violence and fear of attack, to me, invites such things is an absolute.

It is disturbing for you to know that not all gun owners are angry, white, redneck Bible thumpers. It distresses you to know there are black, Hispanic and Democrats who own guns. It fails to meet your meme. Because an individual believes in the right to own guns, they are obsessed or a "gun nut". Are you aware that currently the best competitive shooter in the US is a woman? Because she has perfected target shooting, she is a gun nut?

Let us turn the question on you. What did your family do to you to turn you into a quivering, nervous, coward who so little values his family he would do NOTHING to protect them. If I gave you a golf club or baseball bat, would you consider protecting your family then? Oops...the answer is NO. You do understand the SCOTUS has clearly stated it is not the police's job to protect you. They determined it was the police's job to solve enforce laws and solve crimes, not protect you. I will send flowers and appropriate social sympathy messages to you or your family.

If we are ever accidentally together and someone wants your money, to assault you, etc, it will be my pleasure to allow to live your value of being a victim. I will call the police, after I walk away, and hope for the best for you.

Trying to control the argument now?? Obsession is the wrong word.
Maybe some of us just enjoy shooting. Like some people enjoy bowling. Some of us white-trash redneck, crackers enjoy both! Around here, we play horseshoes too.
If you are a right handed bowler,
throwing a hook, how many boards do you step away from the ball return to handle a 7-10 split??
You and your ilk seem to want to dictate what is best for everyone. If it is something you don't agree with, nobody but the elitist snobs have a right to it! We like guns because we like guns!! It has nothing to do with killing ANYTHING!!! Hell!, I could potentially kill you with a horseshoe, or a bowlinv ball!!

I enjoyed your thoughtful post. Your propensity, in most developed countries like Canada and Western Europe, would be viewed as being a normal, moral, decent member of the society.

Jon Stewart is actually married. Obviously, like most conservatives you are humorless so you take things literally. I would actually pick Sandra Bullock. She is beautiful and extremely liberal. I have dated a long list of Democratic women but never a Republican woman. As George Carlin used to say, "Who in hell wants to fu*k a republican woman"?

i think the democratic women you dated did not wear mini-skirts...they didn't want anyone to see their ballz.

Well, I have had my share over the years and I'm sure there had to be a liberal or two in the bunch (I never had to ask before but maybe I should start) but I honestly don't remember any difference in the physical attributes on any of them. I guess, according to George and you, I'm going to have to do some research and document that there really is a difference. I will get back to you on that unless someone else that has seen this difference will clue me in. Wow, I knew from experience that most liberals had more mental problems than conservatives, but this is a first for me on liberal women having different physical _____ than conservative women. Amazing!!

Who said anything about liberal and conservative women having different physical characteristics? Although I have to acknowledge that the Stepford Wives were most definitely conservatives.

brian, i like your spunk and enthusiasim on your posts. you seem pretty well educated and in tune. i just wanna know why you espouse a lesser form of government than what it says in the constitution? i don't think you are old enough to be a kennedy-era democrat (they still championed capitalism) so if i'm right (no pun intended), then you believe obama's 'take from the ones who earned it' and give it to the slouches...why? why work then if that happens?

This is true, considering that cops and those in the military, i.e. those who are suppose to protect your life, have high suicide rates and homicide rates as well. Looks like you can't trust cops or soldiers to protect you since they can't protect themselves. IOW, cops and soldiers are a menace to society and they should have their guns confiscated for their own good.

Dude...what's with the penis talk.
