Don't underrate yourself, Don. I have a cousin who had a hard time passing in grade school. He became a very successful banker, now retired. Intelligence has little to do with "school stuff", things OTHERS think up to be learned. If you have avoided the leftist trap of entitlement at others' expense, you are brighter than half the population in the US.
Personally I didn't care for Kennedy, one reason being he was a KENNEDY. He was better than most other democrat politicians. He, today, would not be acceptable to the DNC. LBJ, Carter, and Clinton were disgusting "Presidents". The Viet Nam war killed all respect for politicians and democrats in particular for me. I happen to have great respect for George W. Bush and think he is an admirable man. I'm not so fond of his father, but the G.W. isn't like his dad or his brother, Jeb. I have two friends who met George and one of them was his preacher - they both loved him and Laura. The military loved him, and that says more about a President than anything I can think of.
