Yeah, that was a variant. I heard them both. The people who study those things ascribed 14 different accents to the NY area, 4 to Boston. The originals in England claimed that they could tell the street you were born on in London.
I've heard that to be true all over, I once sat with a gentleman that spoke German so well the German woman asked where he came from because she couldn't detect his dialect. Interesting. I use to have the same thing happen to me living in New York, New Yorker's use to ask me where I was from, I guess they were searching for a dialect or slang to connect me to an area. It's amazing what dialects we're familiar with and how it automatically ties us in. Living in another state now for years, but one day heard a woman speaking at a check out and asked her if she was from a certain town, she wasn't from that exact town, but the next one over, that was close enough for me.
