I remember being able to glance at a car and identify it as a Chevy, Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile, or Cadillac, all were made by General Motors and yet they looked very similar. I could spot a chevy and tell you if it was a 210, a deluxe or a Bell air. I could tell you if that Olds was a 88 or a 98. I could sure tell you if it was a Vet, what year and the most probable engine.

I could spot a Ford, Mercury, or Lincoln at the drop of a hat and even tell you if that Ford was a T-bird.

I could easily tell the difference between a Dodge, Plymouth, or De Soto.

There was the wrap-around windshield to give a clue for the year, and the grill and tail end would finish the discovery. 4 door hardtop... Piece of cake.

How about a Studebaker or a rambler?

So, what the hell happened. Drive down a road today and I doubt even the most interested teenager could identify the back end of a Buick from a Chevrolet, let alone a Toyota from a Honda, or a Kia, or a ?????? without looking for a logo of some sort.

There is one saving grace. Even us old farts can spot a Chevy from a Ford from a Dodge half ton pickup at a glance.

This little example says a lot. I am just not sure what it is. But in the interest of making liberals feel better about themselves, I posted this little missive in hopes that even the liberals can grasp the concept........ I hope!

So can you identify the below American sedan.. Even the manufacturer... GM, Ford or Chrysler?... Come on guys, show your stuff.
I remember being able to glance at a car and ident... (show quote)

Packard? Even if I am correct, I cannot tell you the year.

My son said it was to damned old to know and after studying the first one for about 15 seconds called it a De Soto. That is the word above the top of the hood as any of we oooold farts can see.

You are correct. They are both DeSotos.

Originally I was going to walk the liberals into a trap and close this thread with photos of closed plants in Detroit and comment about how liberals would try an blame it all on capitalist while it was them which screwed up this country.

Unfortunately, the manager of this site (and it is his or her prerogative) moved the thread to this venue and took away my thunder. So, I will just post a photo and let you decide if liberalism is a good thing.

I find it interesting the similar aesthetics between the Desoto (Chrysler Corp.) and the Chevrolet (GMC) of the same year.

Think there might have been some collusion, or something nefarious?

(and) What the hell happened to the two tone paint jobs of yesterday year.

Nice chevy and I don't remember when the two tone paint became obsolete. I wonder if it was when we were into the sports car look like the vet. But if I am not mistaken there were some vets with two tone paint as well.

Yes. You are correct about the vets. My 59 was Red with a white panel down the side.

This got me thinking again (will I never learn) and raised even more questions.

Here are two. Which, one of the other mature citizens around here may have the answer for:

What year did the automobiles switch to wrap around windshields and did all the manufacturers mysteriously all switch at the same time?

When did the running boards disappear from the American car?

I did a little Google research and low and behold. The running board all but disappeared on the 1941 Ford.

From 1942 until the end of WWII... Ford did not manufacture automobiles for civilian use. The limited production was sent off to the war effort.

When they re-introduced the civilian after the war it was still like the 42... No running board, just a protrusion in the body..

Now we all know the 49 Ford was a big change and very streamlined for the day. (My first car)

When the '49 Fords came out my buddies and I went to the dealership near us and decided that the metal in the body was pretty soft. You could push on the middle of a door and see one huge dent come into being but it went out when you let off. My first car, as a civilian, was a '53 Ford and I drove the darned things till 2003 when I changed to Chevys. My wife took an old 1997 Jeep and still drives it as her town car although she has a 2007 Jeep that she drives out of town. I am still driving my 1999 Chevy Lumina and am still satisfied with it. I call it my doctor car since it has taken me to dentists and specialists since about 2004.

my first car was a 1951 chevy, not the wedge rear end shape. I paid 285 dollars for it in 1958. The miles were good on it, but back then the dealer could hook up an electric drill to the speedometer chain and run it backwards and the next morning they had an almost new car to sell. The thing I remember about it, is one day, out in the country, three black dudes came flying by me on about the same type car I was driving and slowed down in front of me. When I tried to go on past them, they floored their car and I did too. I was running about 85 mph, about all it would run. They took off first and got ahead of me. A couple of miles down the road their dang hood blew off and somehow got air born. Scared the heck out of me. I looked out the top of my windshield, because I thought it was going to fall on me. The dang thing flew higher than the top of the light poles, but luckly it fell off to the side of the road. Funny now, but not that day

You realize you just caused half (if not more) of the old codgers here to spit out their dentures, laughing.

Shame. Have some consideration. :XD:
