Flags are representative "symbols" of BOTH the good and bad of the country or entity that the flag represents. The flag of the USA is the same. It represents BOTH, our good and bad qualities. Unfortunately, we can't undo the bad we've done in the past. Nor can we stop the flag from representing what will be perceived as our bad actions in the future. It's like a marriage, you get both good and bad times. Neither partner in the marriage can predict what will be the bad times, or when the ad times arrive. Those perceptions will be formed after the fact.
My dad used to tell me that, "... if you choose to only dwell on the negative aspects of our country" (and by default, what our flag represents), "... then you'll never see all of the positive that's come from her;" (and that, I believe, will come from her in the future). (I added the paraentheses.). We certainly have our faults, but compared to other countries, I can't think of very many that would offer me the freedoms and opportunities that we enjoy; that would entice me to give up my USA citizenship.
