I would argue that flags are inanimate and have the attributes that the person who views it brings to the party.
My favorite symbol of the US is the Statue of Liberty. Yours?

I'm partial to the Statue of Liberty too. She presents an image of strength and courage but is also very nurturing and inviting. I also like that she is a gift from France, presented to us to celebrate our new liberty.

As for flags... I always fly the Betsy Ross on the 4th. I do that because that was the flag that was flying on the day the colonists declared their independence, which is of course the day we celebrate. The other reason is that the current flag represents everything the colonists were fighting against. It just seems a bit hypocritical to commemorate a revolution for liberty by saluting the flag of tyranny.

Hey Straightup, glad to see you here....the section just started, so I think it will take a little while to get going. I guess it's a bit of a sanctuary from the crazies..if someone comes on and posts inappropriate insults, the post gets taken down. How cool is that ? Although, the truth is, we all enjoy the arguing as well. That's why the " main" section is so popular....but I'm glad Jelun started this section. I'll continue to let people know....enjoy

Yeah, thanks for pointing it out for me... It's funny though, I don't want to admit it but I really do like confronting the right-wing extremists. But it's nice to have a section where more complex issues might be explored without being hindered by juvenile antics and the never ending parroting of the same handful of discredited misconceptions.

Well said, straightUp! I, too, enjoy a good debate with the "reich-wingers." Lord knows, I've had a few; "theo" being the latest. It's very sad that they use the Bible to justify their very racist views. Plus, no matter how much one shows them the error of their way(s), they'll deny, deny, deny that they're the one who's wrong.

My biggest complaint against them is that they can't accept an opposing point of view without calling their opponent a communist, socialist, liberal, un-American, and un-Christian. I've been called a ni**er-lover, an Obama-lover, and a traitor to my white race. I've even had my military service questioned and accused of being a traitor to my country because I recognized the legitimacy of President Obama's presidency.

These reich-wingers never continue to amaze me with their inability to debate without losing their religion in one form or fashion. That's assuming they had one to begin with.
