The celebrants of this weekends Memorial Day festivities should read the following two articles -

Please note, that I do think that if these commemorations give solace for the pain of lost loved ones, then celebrate but t***hs remain. I was astonished at the revelation in Gary Norths article about us cooperating with Soviets to build highways and bridges in Afghanistan, in 1967, which could be so obviously, militarily useful to an invading country, while we were fighting their ostensible clients in southeast Asia. The treachery is appalling!
I add that my parents often spoke of how, during the 1930s, we sold tons of scrap metal to the Japanese and people asked why; they were just going to shoot it back at us, later anyway. The scrap metal came from torn down buildings and urban t***sportation systems; subways, trolleys and els, for the elevated. Why indeed?
I began my political awareness committed to our various wars; Korea at the time, Viet-Nam, Desert Shield & Desert Storm. As I became more knowledgeable, I became more & more cynical about our foreign interventionism. I now realize that just about every American war has had its base in a lie or overly optimistic imperialism. The following is from an article I wrote several years ago.
There can be no doubt that our soldiers have fought valiantly for the government of this country, as distinct from the country and its ideals themselves, but in the various conflicts in our history, our freedoms have truly been in danger only once from external sources, during The War of 1812, and that was strictly due to our ill-advised, bumbling entrance into the first of our declared wars.
The hawks of that day had screamed for an engagement with the British. In their scenario, the war would be over in three months and we would be welcomed as liberators by an invasion of Canada which would then be annexed.
Instead, the Canadians didnt roll out any welcome mats and the British nearly destroyed our infant navy and armies. Andrew Jacksons vaunted victory at New Orleans actually came after the war was over.
The British burned The White House, The Capitol and other federal buildings and only the strict orders of British Major General Robert Ross prevented what could have a sacking of Washington, D.C., a la Rome (now guys, please try not to let that bring a gleam to your eyes; its tempting, I know but please, some discretion) and had they not initially had the distraction of a war against Napoleons Sixth Coalition, they might have succeeded in bringing their former colonies back under their rule.
Does anyone seriously think that our entry into WWI was to make the word safe for democracy? Even Franklin D. Roosevelts greatest supporters admit that The White House knew that the attack on Pearl Harbor was coming for weeks. At least one and likely both of the ostensible attacks on The USS Maddox didnt happen.
Its gone on from there.
