Having never fired the M-14 I will take your word for it. But I still love the M-1.

The Garand is a superb rifle. The '14 is basically a new and improved Garand. Select fire with a 20 round mag. The best of the Garand and the BAR. Accuracy, power, reliability, and it doesn't weigh a ton like the BAR.

A 20 rnd mag sure beats an 8 round clip. I really liked the 20 rnd mag on the BAR, but it was a heavy piece of equipment. Weighing in, with a full mag, at around 20 lbs. Its one big advantage; it didn't have the recoil of the M-1.

M-14 with a 20 round mag weighs about the same as a Garand.

That in itself is a decided advantage.

****************************

A little over a year after I left the service I walked into an American Auto store (a long defunct chain) to pick up a new battery. They had a barrel full of M1 Garands for sale at $10 bucks each. I looked at a couple to check if the barrels were bent but without breaking them down I couldn't tell what condition, other than heavily used they were in. These came from Tobyhanna Repair depot which was about thirty miles away. I figured that if they couldn't refurbish them then I certainly couldn't and I passed. Last time I checked an M1 Garand goes for 900 plus bucks, any condition.
