If There's Too Much To Sell
It Could Be Dumped In Utah Or In Nevada

The reverse osmosis process that desalination plants use causes them to produce a hyper saline brine that is discharged back into the ocean. Depending on where this discharge happens and how much brine is discharged it is a problem for nearby sea life.

Since they are only putting back into the ocean what they took out minus the water I question how this is all that different from normal evaporation of sea water in the long run. Again I can see how local concentrations of too much salt could be a problem.

I don't know that separating the salt out for dumping in Nevada or Utah is practical for these plants. I would think that discharging it back out into the ocean in a pipeline as brine is the only thing they can do with the byproduct.

Called Dead Zones
It Could Be Less Than Optimal For The Sport And Commercial Fisheries
And Maybe For Close Foraging Mammals Like Otters And Seals
I'm Not A Marine Biologist

And Is The Amount Of Water Able To Be Processed Significant To The Whole Anyway
It's Not Like The Plants Are Going To Make The Tide Roll Out....

That Was In Context To Excess Over Commercial Sales As A Joke
...Salt Lake....Salt Flats....Yuck, Yuck ??

Besides The Concentrations Of The Salt In The Water Isn't OMZ !! MASSIVE !!

The ocean is about 3% salt. This varies a bit though, depending on where you measure it. Near where rivers reach the ocean, the salt content (salinity) will be lower.

But It Is Too Much To Drink Out Of The Cup

The Saudis are big desalination users. You have thermal and reverse osmosis methods. California should be able to learn something from the Saudis.

No, better yet learn from the Israelis. Apparently not everyone in California is an anti Semitic lunatic.

In fairness desalination plants do put back into the ocean some nasty brine, but I don't see how that can't be dealt with. Technology, technology, technology. Liberals could put their obsession with technology to use and find solutions.

In this case the technology is long pipes with holes in them. The brine can be easily dealt with by simply dispersing it in a large enough volume of ocean water.

Far too logical. We need to spend a few billion to study it and make sure it does not harm some yet to be discovered creature. By that time the drought might be over.

I Know Saudi Arabia Has Plants

But They Don't Have The Invasive Delta Smelt To Protect

(Joke Again...Yuck, Yuck ??)

Not now. The smelt and the Arabian sand frog and Mediterranean snail darter were likely k**led off decades ago. Pumping all that oil likely took care of those pesky critters. Otherwise those well known Saudi environmentalists would have shut down the desalination plants.
