Obama’s Department of Justice has announced new plans to give banks more power to inform on customers’ “nefarious activity” and trigger immediate investigations by federal or local authorities.

One of the ways that banks currently f**g the possibility of suspicious activities of their customers is to file a Suspicious Activity Report (SAR) with the federal government. After an SAR is filed, it can sometimes take weeks, even months to see results on a suspicious bank account.

But now the Justice Dept. wants to make it easier for banks to inform on customers. DOJ is now urging banks to contact local or federal law enforcement officials about their concerns.

“The vast majority of financial institutions file suspicious activity reports when they suspect that an account is connected to nefarious activity,” assistant attorney general Leslie Caldwell said on Monday. “But, in appropriate cases, we encourage those institutions to consider whether to take more action: specifically, to alert law enforcement authorities about the problem.”

You go out. You earn hmmm, we will say $10,000 on a contract. Your money is deposited to your bank account. You decide to withdraw $5,000 of your earned money. They want it reported as suspicious activity. Now, Aunti knows you are a suspious charcter; however does that exclude you from withdrawing your money without a report being filed? It is your money.

The DOJ has put several small businesses to waste by this "suspicious activity" gadget. A woman in CA had a Taco Shop for years. Suddenly she goes to buy her weeks supplies and her bank account is empty! DOJ took it all because she had been depositing less than $10k/week for years so they decided it must be drug profits that she was trying to hide by staying below the $10K limit. The real kicker to me is that they do this without warning and then the onus is on you to prove them wrong and when it's all over, they do NOT have to give you a dime back!! In Obama's America it is not necessary to have a gun & a mask to rob people. All you need is a phone and a pen.

How does that even apply? As a matter of policy, how much cash you can deposit or withdraw from your account has always been between you and your bank. Are you suggesting these "new plans" will change that?

Yeah... I mean, I understand the point about the Federal Reserve and it's private ownership... I'm just not seeing the connection between your concerns and the activity in the DoJ related to reporting suspicious activity.

I just started a new contract with another major bank and had to spend an hour going through an online training course on protecting the assets. They have phone numbers and official offices to contact with suspicious activity. This is all coming from the bank not the government and it's pretty much normal. Everyone keeps a close eye on their assets. When the government does that it means looking for the tax evaders and there has been a lot of them recently.

Unless you are evading taxes or stealing money I don't think this news is bad for you. I think where the circle closes for me, is where an actual rule, whether set by government, commercial or consumer contract, interferes with my freedom to invest.

I guess it depends on where I put my $10,000. If I wanted to cash out half my earnings I'd go to a bank that can do that for me.

Money is a weird thing... it can be very elusive. All the money I actually have is about $32... The cash in my wallet and on my dresser. I've had cash stolen before and it really makes it clear that when you loose cash well, you loose it. It's really not yours anymore. Everything else I have are claims to money that other people have, like my bank. Most of these claims are agreed upon with a bank that I am choosing to trust to honor my claim. If they don't then my claim is useless and they have the money not me. It's just a reality Aunti... I'm not describing something I am happy about.
