Drug testing isn't nearly enough. I like what the young Texas lady wrote a few years back to a local newspaper which saw fit to publish her letter:

PUT ME IN CHARGE . . .

Put me in charge of food stamps. I'd get rid of Lone Star cards; no cash for Ding Dongs or Ho Ho's, just money for 50-pound bags of rice and beans, blocks of cheese and all the powdered milk you can haul away. If you want steak and frozen pizza, then get a job.

Put me in charge of Medicaid. The first thing I'd do is to get women Norplant birth control implants or tubal legations. Then, we'll test recipients for drugs, alcohol, and nicotine. If you want to reproduce or use drugs, alcohol, or smoke, then get a job.

Put me in charge of government housing. Ever live in a military barracks? You will maintain our property in a clean and good state of repair. Your home" will be subject to inspections anytime and possessions will be inventoried. If you want a plasma TV or Xbox 360, then get a job and your own place.

In addition, you will either present a check stub from a job each week or you will report to a "government" job. It may be cleaning the roadways of trash, painting and repairing public housing, wh**ever we find for you. We will sell your 22 inch rims and low profile tires and your blasting stereo and speakers and put that money toward the "common good.."

Before you write that I've violated someone's rights, realize that all of the above is voluntary. If you want our money, accept our rules. Before you say that this would be "demeaning" and ruin their "self esteem," consider that it wasn't that long ago that taking someone else's money for doing absolutely nothing was demeaning and lowered self esteem.

If we are expected to pay for other people's mistakes we should at least attempt to make them learn from their bad choices. The current system rewards them for continuing to make bad choices.

AND While you are on Gov't subsistence, you no longer can V**E! Yes, that is correct. For you to v**e would be a conflict of interest. You will voluntarily remove yourself from v****g while you are receiving a Gov't welfare check. If you want to v**e, then get a job.

Agreed. Now write another list tailor made to the Corporate fat cats who drove the world economy of a fiscal cliff in 2008, a series of events that took money from the pockets of every American. It is noteworthy that to date none of these white collar criminals have been jailed. Funny how "Bankster" rhymes with "Gangster"...

On Friday, the state of Michigan took the step to implement a mandatory drug test for recipients of state aid who authorities suspect are taking illegal drugs.

Michigan’s Republican Governor, Rick Snyder, signed House Bill 4118 and Senate Bill 275, authorizing a one-year pilot program that will be implemented in three counties.

“We want to remove the barriers that are keeping people from getting good jobs, supporting their families and living independently,” Snyder said in a statement. “This pilot program is intended to help ensure recipients get the wrap-around services they need to overcome drug addiction and lead successful lives. We’ll then have opportunity to assess effectiveness and outcomes.”

The law allows authorities to drug test aid recipients who are thought to be taking illegal drugs. A positive result for illegal substances can result in termination of welfare for recipients or rejection for aid for new applicants.

The bills were heavily opposed by state Democrats, but Republicans control both the state House and Senate, resulting in easy passage.

Opponents of the initiative said that similar laws in other states have not been proven to save states money.

To all here on OPP, I submit this controversially topic for discussion. In my opinion, I think this is very good idea. The reason for my agreeing with this move by the Michigan Legislature, should be followed by all states as I'm sure we can all agree that there is rampant misuse and abuse of this and other "So called entitlement programs". For those who may disagree with this please remember "WE" are all paying for these programs through our hard earned taxes. Shouldn't we be able to stop the abuse of our money? Those also against this argue money is not being saved. Is that really the point? Your thoughts please.

When Rick Scott ran for Governer of Florida the first time, his platform called for drug testing of ALL welfare recipients and for state employees to pay at least a portion of their pension plan funding. He was elected and the stste leguslature enacted the laws to do what Scott had campaigned on. Some left wing PC judges declared both laws unconstitutional.

Judges are as corript, stupid, and crooked as any politicians. They can be bought and sold, most of them cheaply.

So what would happen to the children if you take welfare from the parent, would they be taken and given to the state? Would they be given to relatives who would then have to apply for assistance! So the cycle never ends! I think some people sometimes don't really think these things thru! Like I said the only real victims here are the children! A drug addict without help is always going to get their drugs!

To All here on OPP- I started this topic to get a response from all who cared to respond. Let me assure you that my intent was not to discuss the war on drugs. But the abuse of the welfare system in general. I have read where people on these programs are selling there assistance to others for cash and trading for drugs or other items such a DVD players, cigarettes, TV, s etc. There are always ways to s**m system. My point is if the government does not enforce any laws on the books pertaining to this problem it will not be solved. Personally I could care less about pot. I'm referring specifically to hard narcotics. If the people who are not concerned about getting caught using then they should have no problem taking a test. What say you?

I served 20 years AR Air National Guard, I have since been under VA care for 15 years, so I have a proven 35 year record of passing drug test's. The problem comes from the last 7 years of my life when I re-injured my back from a service connected injury. I have had to fight for those 7 years now including suing the Federal Government. So here I am worked all my life and already having to fight to get what I paid for, and you and the rest think adding more test's will solve some kind of problem, when all I see it doing is giving another government entity more power over our lives, which I am totally against....

I think it should be made mandatory A S AP..in all states....I also think all welfare recipients should be limited to 2 children.....Eliminate the reward to keep having kids....Public housing should also be tied to drug tests...Its not that I am for more goverment control......I am for less goverment spending and giving lazy sorry assed drug users money to feed their habit....Some people need help.....but not drug users...I have no pity for people who are self abusers......

Most of these posts are completely missing the point by devolving into petty whining about what some welfare c***ts are doing. You sound like a bunch of nasty little second graders squabbling over who got a bigger piece of candy.
Ronald Reagan started this "Welfare Queen" meme because somebody told him it was red meat for his base. Yes at a human level it is irritating to think that someone no better than us is mooching off a system we all pay into but sorry...welfare c***ting is a drop in the bucket compared to the billions that cannot be accounted for from the Iraq war by Haliburton and KBR and other "Defense Contractors", just to name one situation. And oh the irony of all the
Constitution/Liberty/ Anti-Government mavens who advocate such oppressive and selectivey applied deductions from the Constitutional rights of others.
Meanwhile across town Nero fiddles as Rome burns.....

Whosetheboss- Hello as I think this is the first time talking to you. First let me say thank you for your service! I totally understand your sentiment and feelings about this. What I'm referring to and if haven't made myself clear my opolgies. I am specifically referring to those on our country who have made a career of these programs. I realize that every individual has there own unique history and story. You Sir, do not seem to fall into the categories of abusing the system. I would say to you that if we could not only get a handle on the abuse being perpetrated by these professional s**mmers could perhaps offer other programs that really could help those who really need it. I am also disabled at 100% though the VA. Metal in my back to include a metal plate from injuries sustained while in the military and according to the VA I also have PTSD. Two major back surgeries with a third looming out there. I can walk fine with a cane and do my business on my own. So I really do understand. Thank you for your response and I enjoy your comments. Please continue! Take care brother.

Agreed. There should be no such thing as welfare. In a meritocracy those that work eat. Those that don't ..lose weight. The system needs overhaul and as someone else suggested, chip weeds in front of City Hall if no other work is available. There should be (ideally) no exchange of money without labor.
There are however a certain percentage of call them what you like, malingerers, malcontents, moochers who are always going to try to c***t the system. I think this actual percentage is very small but unless you have the stomach for totalitarian solutions like euthanasia, these fringe dwellers will be always with us.
