How many of you have given any though to what happens when someone destroys our electric grid? I think of it all the time, but never take the trouble to think about this lasting as many years to overcome as it certainly will. We don't have a well that could pump water for us without electricity. My wife doesn't have a washboard, like in the old days, although she is a hard worker. I guess we could just wear all our clothes were worn out but what would we do for food to keep ourselves heavy enough to need those clothes long. I don't have enough ammo to hold off all the robbers who would come to our house. Oh well, I have been around a long time so being stingy and not caring is the way to go.

I can remember when this would not have been that big a deal. Today, we do not have a well from which to hand draw water, no wood cooking stove, no wood stove to heat the house. We have every thing, but in this case we would have nothing.

I have given this enormous thought.
Something's I thought of as old fashioned I now champion
Gardening, canning, hunting, chickens, wood burning stove that I do not have yet.
Marketable sk**l sets
homeopathic medicine, diet, storage, mobility,( networking also something I do not have. ) Water treatment.
I understand completely the concept of self sustaining it is not the same as maintaining our current standards of living communal as we do.
I look a great deal of those fears in the eye and I try to master them. Literally I try to circumvent any hold or sway they may have over my life.
The first step was knowledge.
The second Limited application learning to garden canning sewing
The third was planning, that is where I became a bit overwhelmed. I have not given up being my own captain so to speak. I just have yet to work a workable plan.
This spring we as a family will be learning some more by doing. Making soap, shampoo, dish soap, I have added many recipes for household items into our family cookbook. Garden planning dry storage
We will still enjoy our recreations, archery , horses, etc. But we will continue to learn and apply old fashioned methods of providing for ourselves.
It's a balance thing. I know that God is in charge. I know that I can not plan for everything. I like the service/ convenience system. But it's good to learn things like making soap from start to finish including learning how to substitute items and balance pH to the purpose of the product.
I care, I plan and invest in myself .I hope for the best. But I plan for the worst.
In the end I will depend on God . To carry all the stuff I can't carry learn or supply.
Millstones that you either hang
around your neck . or learn to roll into a harvest.

Its startling to think that in a matter of hours we could be worse off than the pioneers.

Have you ever thought how fast our lives were changed with having electric, refrigeration, the automobile, radio, t.v., then computers?

There was a time when everyone knew how to live off the land in summer or winter. We as a people are so inter-connected that we really have no idea what would happen if much of our infrastructure would be destroyed.

We hear stories of men jumping out the windows of tall buildings during the great depression. I fear the destruction and horrible loss of human life would on a scale that has never been imagined by most Americans if something of this magnitude would happen again.

The government has housed, fed, clothed, educated, and dumbed down nearly half of our population to the point that they would have no idea of how to survive an invasion, collapse of the government, or a substantial loss of any safely organized leadership.

Thank God there are still some who have a pioneering spirit and survival knowledge. WHO ALSO HAVE GUNS>

Far worse off. They knew what to do. We don't.

I bet you know more than two.
So many are seeing the value of old fashioned living.
I think that's why so many books are on the market. There is a market for them.
Candle making
Make your own soaps.
Canning books
Blogs about canning and dehydrating foods.
Garden planning and lay out.
Oh Grace I bet you know many who have developed interests to old fashioned living.

National Geographic does a pretty good job with their video "American Blackout 2013" in showing what would most likely happen if our power grid were to be destroyed in a cyber attack:

As you see in the case of the prepper, your stance on being stingy and not caring is the way to survive!
