I do not think RR was insulting veterans. I think he simply meant they are used by government/society, then ignored/not treated when done.

The problem is increasing. I don’t know what solution if any will be looked back on one hundred years hence as having worked.

So I've been working with this struggling population, addicts and mental illness for more then 33 years. What worked best for society is isolating the "sick" until, if ever, they can function in society with or without an assistant. But we closed down those facilities, opened the door and told them to come to the clinic once a month for their meds. People who are mentally ill, includes addiction, will find relief where ever they can, a bottle of booze, a meth pipe, f******l pills, pot, sex, violence, ect. They are unable to function alone on their own till stabilized and need regular monitoring. That will not and cannot for the "most" part happen outside a structured environment. That's not to say, that on rare occasion, some are not able to function and monitor themselves. Giving vouchers for hotel rooms, tent cities and clean needles will never be the solution. It requires 24 hour a day structured supervision that includes education in self care, coping sk**ls, problem solving, anger management, ect. After all those things are internalized "if the patient wants them", it's possible for these people to have a productive life.

I agree, he wasn't ' brown mouthing' vets. Some have 'Shell Shock' aka PTSD ( Post Traumatic Stress Disability) and need help.
VA has number to call if one is thinking suicide. What some 22 vets die daily this way...

Education. Help to deal with their demons. The situation is escalating and not sustainable. Vets are used and then ignored as are the mental challenges and the less talented.

If a person can not function in normal society normal society has a problem.

Cannot function or willfully do not want to function?

One solution - quit enabling them. The vast majority are drug/alcohol related. They cannot be helped until they want to be helped. Most do not.

I worked with a group of veterans in a large midwestern city; we tried to help those that were pay handling on street corners. Very few were interested in help - they wanted money - for their addiction.

A local news reporter decided to do an article on homeless people; she visited one of the local encampments. Same result - they didn’t want help.

Strange "but the home owners, people paying the taxes" can't sue homeless for devaluing their real estate with their homeless presence in the neighborhood. What a FU state!

Liberal logic.. If I tell homeless person to move away from my backyard, according Lubturds I'm harrassing homeless people?... I used to work for blood bank and we used to pay people $15.00 for pint of blood... 90% of people who were homeless used to donate blood just so they can go across the street to the liquor store...

Homeless people are citizens. They are undesirable neighbours. Therefore create undesirable camps like reservations to control. house and educate for reintegration into productive society.

Some homeless people dont want to be productive members of society... Why should they?? People give them money and buy food for them because our society is basically comprised of nice and humane people... And some citizens take advantage if that..

Heard a story:
Driver picked up a hitch hiker.
Pulled in to get gas, went in to pay.
Came out ,car was gone.
Hitchhiker stole his car!

Moral of story:
Don't leave keys in car with a hitch hiker!

I want your honest opinion. What would you do if a few homeless camped on your property, wouldn't leave, and the cops wouldn't evict them because they have more rights than YOU ?

Honest opinion. I would be pissed.

What would I do. I don’t know. Living in a small sleepy town it the heart of an intense agricultural community where work is so plentiful that we import thousands of Mexicans who come back year after year that I can not imagine having homeless camped in my yard.
You are right about the rights. Here as well.

But would I do? Because it would not just be my front lawn. It would become a community of them.

Hypothetically, because it won’t happen here in my lifetime, I would recruit them as security. As long as they protect my property I will pay for a Johnny on the Spot. .

We all need some place.

Are you referring to Vets are used and then ignored?

That is not an insult to vets. That is a fact that neither side needs to address.

It could also be a contributing reason for the recruitment problem. Odds of being homeless for vets seems high, even here.
