A wechat group I'm in is comprised of mostly younger teachers from the US and Canada... Last night they were having a rather interesting discussion concerning student debt forgiveness in the US... Seems that the federal government is considering forgiving $10,000 in debt for each individual (not sure if this is true, they didn't provide an article)...

Anyway, some of them were considering using this as an opportunity to get some freebies... A lot of programs and certifications out there are less than $10,000...Moreland college for example offers some great online certifications and liscenses...

I find the idea rather deplorable... Individuals living overseas (this group is mostly Asia ~ China, Korea, Japan) taking taxpayer money (although it should be pointed out that Americans are still required to pay tax even when working outside of the US)...

Personally, I'm against most forms of debt forgiveness... Especially concerning student loans.... But that opinion isn't shared by most Millennials...

One of the women in the group is a dual citizenship (UK/USA...But her parents are from Nigeria) and has an astonishing amount of student debt... She admits to having had to take a math course six times in order to graduate... Her degree is in visual arts and she was jobless for a year upon graduation...Which led to her first moving to Korea to teach ESL (fired three times in a year) and later China (fired twice in her first year and now unemployed despite there being a desperate need for foreign ESL teachers over here)... She hasn't made a student debt payment in over a year due to the debt freeze, but will be unable to do so when the freeze ends...

She, and many like her, blame their issues on c***d and bad luck (she was fired five times in 2 1/2 years!!!) and openly advocate for student debt forgiveness...

I have a very different solution to student debt...Stop giving loans to i***ts who choose useless majors... When a straight A student applies for a medical program, that's the time for loans...

Your opinions???

Your last paragraph is dead on. G****r studies is as worthless as the paper it's printed on. My boys are in good jobs( one a swat team member at our neucular plant by us. And the other is a supervisor in a large contrition company) They both went from graduating high school into the workforce and worked their way up. Both in their 30s. Higher education is a waste of money for most things but basic needs for society. That's a large range of jobs. Also universities shouldn't require classes that have no bareing on the chosen field.

Absolutely agree with the last point...
I'm amazed at some of the "courses" that are required to graduate...

My opinion ? My opinion is to call the Biden student loan forgiveness program exactly what it is. It is a bribe. President Biden and the Democrats are bribing those in the correct age group to v**e for them. Since the Biden Administration can't earn their v**es, they are buying their v**es with American taxpayer money.

When you examine what this is actually about, it becomes quite clear and simple. Most Americans are easily bribable, purchasable, and monetarily incentivized to be selfish. So America, what is your price ? How cheap of a whore are you ? At least be a high priced street walker. Make Olde Uncle really really pay up. After all the olde skin flint has the entire US Treasury at his disposal to buy your Soul.

H****r had to pay up to do blow off the cracks of his crack whores. Don't give the 'big guy' any discounts for your v**es.
My opinion ? My opinion is to call the Biden stude... (show quote)

Good point... I wasn't thinking of it as a bribe, but that's very obviously what it is...

I had to pay off my student loan. When I didn’t the government garnished my wages until it was paid off.
No freebies, period!!

The simplest answers are generally correct. Democrats are the masters of buying v**ers. In China I expect there is no need for that.

But in China there is no need for bribing v**ers because office holders are in power for life. Here in the West we at least indulge in the fantasy of telling ourselves we can throw the bums outs, every 2-4-6 years. We usually put in place new bums, but it takes them a few years to figure out the best ways to screw us over.

Ideally politicians should be changed as often as a baby's diapers and for the same reasons. I wish I could recollect who first said that. Oh yea, I should have recalled it. Mark Twain.

Okay, but who has the power to replace them, the v**ers or the Party ? Even in the old USSR it was the party, not the v**ers who toppled Nikita Khrushchev. After FDR we put in a two term limit on our Presidents. Arguably we should do that with our Senators and Congress Persons.

As bad as Democrats and Republicans can be, they are the only real safe guard on one another from total tyranny. In China and Russia there are essentially no valid alternatives for v**ers if they become dissatisfied. Also I don't care how talented any political leader is at the top, they are as an athlete in that over time they degrade. You can't tell me that Vladimir Putin, wh**ever we think of his ethics, is as sharp and capable as he was 20 years ago.

For that matter President Xi cannot be as capable after all of these years of bearing the weight of running China as he once was.

I find that it is not truly necessary to go into debt for an education. One can enlist in one of the service branches and earn credits toward college. Also one grows up in that four years and is ready for college.
I repeat again about the neighbor I knew growing up. T was older than me and was drafted into the US Army and sent to Korea in 1952. He earned two years of college through correspondence courses before he was discharged. He was in an infantry company and was fighting so it was not like he had plenty of time to sit and study his lessons. His mother was a single mom, his dad did not come back from WWII.

You can attend college while enlisted at no cost if you are not deployed to a war zone that is. At least that's what happened with my son who did 5 tours of duty, 4 in the Middle East. But we (US) did pay for 2 years of college after he returned and discharged. Too bad it wasn't 4. He ate his education up, committed and a great student. (not saying that because he's my son, that's what being a Marine instilled in him).

Both have political monopolies. It makes for strong leadership during bad times and crisis, but entrenched power structures also tend to tyrannize minorities, become extremely patronage dependent, and corrupt. American cities such as New York City were well known for patronage and corruption during the 19th century as one party majorities cemented their power in concrete.

The only solution is to have competing power centers. The best check on any crook is to have another competing crook watching him. There simply are not enough honest people entering politics to go around. China and Russia being one party dictatorships are by design corrupt. Wh**ever internal party rivalries that exist are inadequate to keep everybody honest.
