General Chit-Chat (non-political talk)
Well, evidently, law enforcement doesn't have to follow the rules of the road, or have a sense of humor

Geeze sounds totally ridiculous what you went through. I was involved in a bad accident a couple years back when a UPS truck stopped abruptly in front of me. skipping through the details I was accused of being on Heroin so I had to go through field sobriety testing . I was completely sober and I have never even seen heroin. long story short the police ticketed me for failing to maintain my lane when the UPS truck was in the middle of the street. When it came time to pay the ticket the clerk did not have it on the docket and told me to call the ticketing officer and he swore he filed the ticket with the courts. I went back and the clerk said no and to get back with the ticketing officer so I did. He told me he would go to the clerks and straighten it out. The day of my court appearance I went to the clerk to pay up and she said "you'll have to go back to the ticketing agency" I told her I had been going back and forth on this for 3 weeks now and she asked for my copy of the ticket. She stamped it No charge DA and told me it did not exist. I still have this old ticket in my glove box. What a joke. The sad thing is a couple months later the UPS driver died in a motorcycle accident. A co worker of his told me the guy was always accident prone.

I'm out running errands today all over town, and had my route planned out till I decided to deviate a little since I hadn't been down that road in a long time. It's just a 2 mile cut across, narrow, 2 lane little road, and I wanted to see if anything has changed. At the last stop sign leaving civilization, a Deputy Sheriff pulled up behind me. No big deal, except that she literally rode my bumper for a bit, and it got my dander up.
After the stop sign, I noticed that the road had been re-striped with a double yellow paint. I can't call it a line, because it is as crooked as a politician, if not more so.
With her on my bumper, I started following the painted lane marking without crossing the paint. Whoever drove that paint truck must have been HAMMERED!!!!
Long story short, I was pulled over for driving erratically, and harassed beyond my own belief.
It took 3 of em. Yep, two more showed up to handle this dangerous sumb***h!!
I was compliant with them, and I was still put in cuffs while they searched the vehicle of this offender of following government painted lines. They wanted field sobriety tests, I said get the thing and let me blow in it. They mentioned pills, and stuff. I told them arrest me for DUI, take blood, and get ready to defend your actions.

I'm a little pissed right now.

I spent one Saturday morning about 6 years ago crushing beer cans and bagging them to take to the recycling plant. As I was heading down Route 50 a motorcycle zipped past me at about 75 Mph and the rider lost control and ran off the road and disappeared into a ditch. I stopped my truck and climbed down into the ditch to help the guy but he was way beyond any help I could offer. I climbed to the top of the ditch and called 911. When the copter took off for the hospital one of the county cops said he wanted to talk to me. He asked me if I had been drinking and I told him no. He said he could smell alcohol coming from me and I explained about crushing beer cans all morning. I had to a breathalizer test and it came up zero. He said his equipment must be faulty and I was under arrest for DUI. To make a long story short, they took me to jail and I asked for a blood test. When that came up zero the charges were dropped. I still had to pay the towing charge plus one day storage for my truck. Next time I witness an accident I'm just going to keep on trucking.

Sorry you met the Grinch, Arch... Look into dash-cams, front and rear [if possible]. They're cheap and provide a witness nobody can question. fjb

I do not blame you. I just got through paying a $189 speeding ticket. This is the second ticket I have gotten in 50 years of driving. The ticket was for going 46 mph in a 35 mph zone, entering the small town of Nixon, Texas. The last speed sign I saw was for 50 mph, so I thought I was going well below the limit. The officer was very professional, but I feel like, with my record, I could/should have been given a warning. I did not go back and see if the 35 mph was actually posted or not. The last, and only other ticket I got was in 1982, again in a small town I was traveling through, and again for going faster than the posted speed. But in THAT case, I DID go back and look, and there was no sign. However, when I talked to the judge about it, I was told that I was responsible for knowing the town's speed limits, sign or no sign. City hall CAN be beaten, but is it worth the effort? Sometimes, I guess, but not for me, and not over a speeding ticket.

Small town cops are the worst. That's often how they make money for their budget.

I got pulled over for doing 52 I think it was, in a 35. I had just come off the interstate and there was no speed limit sign posted. When the deputy pointed out that GA speed limit inside city limits absent a sign is 35 I pointed out there was no city limit sign either, and then I pointed to the pasture with cows in it we were sitting next to. Not what you'd call city limits with no notice. Most of the time if there is no notice given you can beat it.

Did you get a ticket or warning?

Hear you & some wonder why bystanders don't want to get involved.

I’ve never had police problems but have seen some things that I will never forget. My rule, despite wanting to help those in need, is to never stop for a serious auto wreck unless you are legally obligated to.

At least you made a new friend. I live in a small town (800 people). I have met the chief and the other officer. No problems here. Maybe it would be different if I were from somewhere else it would have been different.

Law enforcement does have to follow the rules of the road and you can ticket them for tailgating but you better be able to prove it by witnesses or a rear dash cam. Had a friend, a law student, do this many years ago and he won in court.

In my state of Texas most emergency vehicles have exempt license plates on them and can exceed or not comply with the established traffic code. If an accident occurs or some other violation of the traffic code occurs and injury or property damage is involved the officer or other public servant (Fire, EMS, or other public service vehicle) can be held liable and responsible for any injury or damage incurred.

You are certainly in a position to know more than me. It was always my understanding that emergency vehicles were only allowed to exceed traffic laws when their lights and/or siren were going. However that may have changed or maybe I was always wrong. Anyway, thanks for the input.
