There's a lot more to it than "who foots the bill".

I don't deny that money is important; it's just not the only important thing. The U.S. can pay what it thinks is its fair share. Other important factors are: being a good example; respect; discussion; and cooperation.

Also, a lot of people don't work primarily for money. They train and work at things because they care about those things. They're "not in it for the money" but of course they need enough funds for living expenses and to support what work they're trying to do. Many of these motivated people are in the U.S. and are willing to help in various ways (in India or here or wherever). A government might help coordinate or facilitate their efforts; or it might instead obstruct them or ignore them and not help them.

I thought I was straightforward enough.

Amusing, maybe. I can see a little humor in it.

👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

This "new user" insults all OPP members in his/her very first Topic ("Most of those OPP folks are going to say things like: 'It's just a h**x anyway.' Or, 'It's over there; it doesn't have anything to do with us.' Or 'It's their own fault.'"). The way s/he talks about us does not sound like a new user. I wonder who this is??

(I suspect if there's a response to this, it will be something like "I've been reading OPP a long time, I just never bothered to comment...")

Indians are to blame for this... Collectively...

Wow, the direct correlation to this country is rather stark, isn't it? We have a party that doesn't understand the concept of greater good, it's all about their selfish personal freedoms.

_I_ didn't say I was a new user.

Did I guess well or not? Is it not true that a large portion of writers on OPP think as I guessed?

And would it be _derogatory_ to think most of you would think such things? Maybe some people think as I guessed, and would take it as a compliment that it be recognized.

My closing statement in the OP was: "I wonder whether you'll have told me your reactions, and whether I guessed correctly about how you would react to this article." That's not really insulting. Actually, it seems kind of respectful.

You ask, "I wonder who this is??" I was JohnCorrespondent. At least one person seemed to think I had claimed too much by such a name, as though I had claimed to be some kind of "news correspondent" hired by an important newspaper (which I'm not). So, I changed my name to JohnCo. That would be a politely unassuming name, I thought. (Oddly, a person with "dr" denoting "doctor" in _his_ name found fault with my name JohnCo.). JohnCo seemed okay for a while; but one day I was telling some of my background, and another poster seemed to think that again I was claiming something, or that I was looking down on others. After reflection, I thought maybe I _had_ described myself in too much detail, in a way that would offend some people. (Not my fault exactly, but maybe I had been too insensitive to people's sensitivities.) So then I decided to change my name again. Why would I want my very name, or my background, to offend people? So I chose "3507" this time. Who would find fault with that, I thought; it's probably not even an interesting number.

As for who insults whom on OPP, is it really I whom you need to critique? I think others make insults a lot, sometimes quite rudely. I am almost always subdued (sometimes wordy, but not rude) and polite (even when being critical of others).

Now what; will I have to change my name yet again, even after so short a time? Maybe adopt a few new mannerisms to try to fit in? ("When in Rome, do as the Romans do"?). (Or am I "Rome"?)

And then I thought: Most of those OPP folks are going to say things like: "It's just a h**x anyway." Or, "It's over there; it doesn't have anything to do with us." Or "It's their own fault."

So I find this interesting in a macabre way. (Make no mistake about what I think: I do think it's an awful situation in the hospitals in India. And I don't think it's "their" fault -- although it might be Mr. Modi's fault -- he's the political leader in India who had the power to lead better regarding the p******c.)

I present it as an Original Post, because it seems unfair to burden someone else's post by sneaking this into a reply. I'll be sneaky some other day, but just not this time.

I won't be able to keep up with responses; I'll be gone about a day anyway; but I'm curious; when I find time to drop in here, I wonder whether you'll have told me your reactions, and whether I guessed correctly about how you would react to this article.

India is, in and of itself, a huge super-spreader ongoing event. Their cities are the filthiest and their water is contaminated. Probably less than half have indoor plumbing. It's like the country is one big NYC.

Don't change your name. Why change it in the first place anyway. If it bothers people that's not your fault.
