You sound so frustrated! In my business I'm also "required" to do the social things. Believe me, many of them very well could be considered "work." Remember, these workers many times do not "get off at 5 pm." It often entails giving up weekends to be with one's family. In most cases I would have preferred to take care of my other responsibilities. You must have led an absolutely awful existence.
I agree that we could do with few bureaucrats. OR do I detect a bit of jealousy?
