I'm a bit confused. Islam become the dominant religion in the 7th century (AD 651) and the Pahlavi dynasty in 1925. What happened less than 170 years ago?
The Iranian revolution in 1979 opened the door for Islamic extremists to take over. Voila, Ayatollah Sayyid Ruhollah Musavi Khomeini.

I wonder if those rising up against the Islamic Regime saw the writing on the wall when president Trump's ME peace efforts that began in 2017 started gaining significant ground. Especially because it is all centered on peace with Israel. Iran doesn't like Israel.
Keep in mind, Iran is ruled by a hard-core Shia theocracy and the rest of the ME countries are dominated by Sunni Muslims and their governments or ruling class are for the most part secular - Saudi Arabia is a case on point. Shia and Sunni Muslims have been going at it for 1400 years.
Now that Sunni dominant nations are talking peace with Israel, maybe those revolting, including, it seems, units of the Iranian regular army, are a bit uncertain about their future under the Iranian tyrants.
Just a thought.
