Actually, with the warming of the climate, we now have possums. Tthey started showing up about 30 years ago and they eat ticks. Trouble is, with their naked tails, they look like giant rats and folks shoot 'em. Aside from eating ticks, they are harmless little marsupials, sort of dumb, but not harmful. They don't eat our chickens or bite the dogs or anything.

I took a nostalgia trip two years ago to the site of the 912th AC&W sqdn, up near Ramore Ontario. I was stationed there in 1956/57. Back then the winter temperatures hovered around -40F except when it got cold. The site is privately owned now but the owner let me go up "lava mountain" to where ops used to be. The tower that supported the FPS-3 search radar is still standing but ops is only a concrete pad where the building once stood. Folks told me that the winters have gotten very mild, and the museum in Kirkland Lake, where Jane and I had an apartment, shows possums as part of the wildlife now!

Hug, You really need to learn the difference between socialism and Liberalism. Of all the Democrats I know only one considers himself a socialist. Bernie certainly is a socialist, but he is not even a Democrat, but caucuses with them. I used to teach US history, and government. It's a shame you never took my class.

I enjoyed and appreciated your nostalgia. In England, I went with my friend to the base where her father was stationed in WWII. Nothing left but the concrete runway grown up with weeds, but for her it was where her father had lived. It was special.

I know Bernie, as his son took chemistry with me when I taught at Burlington High. Actually we do a lot of socialist stuff in Vermont. In our little rural township we have public roads, run by the selectmen, and public schools run by the school board, but bigger towns and cities have even more such services. We tried private roads in the state's early history, but it didn't work. Sometimes there are public services that are so important, or which cannot be run at a profit by a private company, that they have to be taken over by government. That has to be decided by the v**ers at town meeting, or by the legislature for larger services.
