Yes, 'tis a strange world fraught with Squids, Gobs, Sailors, Jack-Tars, Salty Dogs, Sea Dogs, Swabs, Tars, Seamen, Seafarers, Shipmen, Swabbies, Deck-Apes and the rarest of 'em… Ancient Mariners.

Luckily, US Marines are diligent in keeping the above riff-raff under control

Wow! My brother and uncle were both in the Navy and you've put out some names that I haven't heard before, and I thought I had heard them all! I think I like deck-ape the best!

My apologies to your brother & uncle, but especially you for having 'deck-apes' in the Family.

Engaging with BadBobby, aka 'BB' and/or 'The Ancient Mariner' always brings out the inter-service feistiness in me. BTW, BB is often referred to as 'The Ancient Mariner' due primarily to his being probably the oldest living 'deck-ape.' It has been reported by sources not to be mentioned that BB was First-Mate on Noah's Ark...hence, the self-explanatory moniker.

My brother joined because he thought it would be the answer to all his problems. He was 17. He h**ed it.
My cousin Joe was a gunner on a Huey and got blasted on his first mission...all on board dead. When my time came up before the draft board, I didn't get drafted. I felt lucky to have been missed so I didn't even think about joining. It makes me feel bad nowadays, I guess because I hold our veterans in high respect.

My brother ended up on an LST and what a screwed up ship. He had a hot pipe over his bunk and had to get out of bed to turn over. And hot? Oh my goodness!
My uncle saw action in the Pacific theater and burned all his uniforms after he got discharged. Later on, him and his old shipmates would reunite and the he wished he had kept his old uniforms.
So, you're saying that Noah asked BB, "Ya see any leaks?"

Interesting Family history with the military. I am so sorry to read of your cousin's fate.

According to BB, Noah didn't have much to say. He only barked orders to his fledging Squid, and those were mostly to "scoop the poop". The word was that BB excelled in his duties.

you should be extremely proud of your cousin. Many young men missed the Nam war because they got high numbers in the draft. There is no shame there,
BTW
don't take the 'dastardly Marine too seriously
I hear he fell on his head as an infant
and has yet to recover
