'I can do that'
My Grandmother, a feisty ninety-one and living alone in a small town in Oregon, had a total hip replacement and was house-bound.
Our family, not being nearby, was concerned for her welfare and called Meals on Wheels.
We let the service know how Grandmother didn’t like the idea of being dependent on anyone for anything.
The next day a volunteer phoned Grandmother and cheerfully explained that Meals on Wheels is a service which relies on volunteers to help the elderly and the ill. Would she be interested in it?
There was a reflective pause. "Well, sure," my grandmother said. "If you can't find anyone else to get food to the old people, I guess I can."
BearK is that kind'a lady.

My mom and dad were like that. Tuff as everything.Mother was diagnosed with overian cancer at 88 years of age. She had a 4 1/2 hour surgery and 2 chemo sessions lost a lot of weight and was as happy as a bug in a rug. The doctor involved sent her along that pathway early but she still was 93 years old. Extraodinary woman, and my dad too...actually that whole generation. They were the best that America ever produced IMHO.

While I have never met BearK, I know that she must be that kind of person just from her posts.
Have you visited with her in person recently? Our good friend Diane did a couple of portraits of Bear (the dog) and I am wondering if she has shown you the artwork.

I am on the phone with her at this very moment. She again confirmed that she did receive Diane's portraits of Bear. In fact, she just took in a new dog, Bonnie. BearK seems very happy with her. That is all I will say at this time, as our conversation disallows much posting.

Amen to that. They brought their children up to be tough, too. No whining allowed.

My grandmother had cancer, too. By the time she complained and had surgery, they just closed her up, because it had gone too far. She continued to live alone and do for herself until she had to go into care. My grandfather had a heart attack and died in the night, my grandmother died the following morning. They had a double funeral and are interred side by side. Although they never divorced, they hadn’t lived together for thirty years. The clicker here is that they spoke and had dinner together the last Christmas of their lives.

Even a dastardly Marine finds a nugget every once-in-a-while.
