China jumped ahead because it wanted to. Shanghai is now the richest city in China so the Chinese could afford to go back on their word and the agreement. It simply happened quicker than they thought it would.

Taking back control was more important than keeping their word. They lost face.

How did China jump ahead?

All cities in China are richer than they were twenty years ago...

How have the Chinese attempted to "take back control"?

It's 2019, not 2048.

If people charged with doing something wrong haven't been sent to the mainland for adjudication and now are being required to do so. That's jumping ahead of 2048.

It isn't complicated. China jumped the gun. I know you love China and are married to a Chinese. That makes it hard to see both sides, plus you work for the Chinese. That makes it twice as hard. Good luck is all I can say and I hope everyone stays safe and no one else dies on either side. I have no dog in this fight.

Either the treaty and agreement mean what it says or it doesn't. I just see one side breaking its word. Not because they are right but because they are more powerful. The bottom line is c*******m rules and everyone must obey c*******m. C*******m, socialism, and marxism always end in death and destruction because of people's desire to live their lives as they choose are squelched. You can't read, listen, or speak about things you like and are forced to obey the government whether you agree or not. C*******m like all ism's sucks.

If c*******m went away today the only unhappy people would be the elite at the top of the c*******t party. A very small percentage of a very populous nation. Every human heart yearns to be free. It just a natural human condition of our DNA and it's worldwide and in every race.

Try the people of Hong Kong in China, as if, Hong Kong courts were illegitimate. They're not until 2048.

No offense... That is bulls**t...

Not a single individual has been sent to the mainland... Nor have any been required to.... That is the point... There is no extradition agreement...

If an individual breaks the law and flees to Hong Kong before being apprehended( or vice versa) there is no legal mechanism to being them to justice...

No gun has been jumped... A law was proposed by the Hongkong legislature (not breaking the agreement, they have that right)... It was protested against (peacefully in the beginning and for valid reasons)...The Hong Kong legislature opted to postpone v****g on it for a year (to conduct further studies and address those valid concerns)... far more violent protests broke out..Including attacks on police and civilians and vandalism of private and government property... The Hong Kong legislature agreed to tank the proposed law.. More violent protests and acts of vandalism take place...

No Chinese interference to date...

So what are you talking about?

Do you believe that the people of Hongkong shouldn't have an extradition treaty with the mainland? They have extradition treaties with dozens of other nations?

My being married to a Chinese woman has nothing to do with my beliefs concerning the issue...Nor does my living in China... As I've stated, the fact that no law or agreement was broken is what makes me think these protesters are criminal scum like a****a...

We seem to be making no headway in our talks. Probably because of differences in our ages and life experience. Receiving a paycheck from China and being married to a Chinese has to make a difference whether you see or acknowledge it or not. It's part of your current life. It plays a part in your marriage (heart), income (livelihood), home (comfort), and future (dreams). It plays a bigger role than you acknowledge. It doesn't mean you are wrong.

Don't disagree at all, that scumbags have infiltrated the protest from both sides. Very likely in fact.

Not a single individual sent to the mainland yet. So why bring it up, if you don't plan on doing it? Why would Hong Kong bring it up if not being pressured? Unless the leaders are really stupid they had to know that bringing it up would worry people. Neither of us knows what pressure is being exerted or palms greased without our knowledge. History says it's always the more powerful not the weaker that exerts pressure.

I think the leaders of Hong Kong should serve and work for their people until the formal turn over occurs. If they are working on t***sition ideas ahead of time, that's fine and smart to do, just explain it to the people better, before it happens. Because some things like freedom of religion will change, laws and rules will change. One day you're a good law-abiding citizen and the next day you are a criminal. That's scary. No matter what is discussed some people are not going to accept it and will cause problems no matter what. People are going to die no matter what happens. Hopes it's a few as possible. I would allow those who want to leave to do so. It's better than shooting them and will make the t***sition much smoother.

The Brits are getting off pretty easy in this discussion and they caused all the problems we are facing today. Because they had superior weapons and used them and opium to get their way. When Mao took over and acquired equalizing weapons, the Brits left pretty quick and succeeded kicking the can a hundred years down the road. By then Hong Kong is mostly westernized and central banks are in almost every country controlling the money supply and collecting interest on every t***saction. Another reason to always follow the money and most of it has ended up under central bank control worldwide. Very slick!

Good post... And many excellent points

I still think that Hong Kong and China need an extradition agreement... Too many criminals use it as a safe haven... But I also agree that the terms of the agreement need to be clear...

Ultimately I hope that peace returns and the people of Hongkong live prosperous lices

Great news, I thought we weren't making any progress! You know that an extradition agreement is in the future just keep the people up to speed on what it says and when it will take effect.

Like the poor, criminals will always be with us. Five finger discounts are growing more popular.

Don't know about the prosperous lices though? That an itchy situation.

Enjoyed the debate.

You too! Spirit is strong the body is falling apart. Time just doesn't care, but it treats most the same. Except for Christy Brinkley, she has only aged about ten years since the 70s.
