I surely cannot answer that question, PR, considering the competing world views of the political governance of the US and Russia, a true friendship may not be possible, such as the friendship between America and Israel for example.

However, an alliance between our two nations is possible. In an extreme world crisis, it has happened before.

First, let's consider this: Despite Syria, Israel-Russia relations are the warmest in history. Intriguing, isn't it?

If Putin is warming to Netanyahu and vice versa, what does this mean to us? Who can say? Sounds promising to me.

But here's the bottom line, we must look to the people, not the governments.

What is the most powerful desire embedded in EVERY human heart? The desire for love and freedom. Throughout our troubled world, these are the fundamental desires of human beings.

But think of it. In so many countries, what keeps those desires hidden? What forces the citizens to hide their true feelings? FEAR! Fear of their own governments, fear of oppression, fear of punishment and persecution.

I have no doubt there are millions of people in each country on earth, Russia, China, NK, the ME, South America, people everywhere, who truly want to be free and to know love.

There is however another matter to consider in what suppresses the true desires of the human heart - secularism. Secularism without a transcendent perspective does not just suppress human desires, it purges them from the heart and creates a human with no objective moral reference. This is not good, this is dangerous, this is the foundation for tragedy.

Still, I am trying to imagine how radically the world would change for the better should the United States and Russia become friends.

Putin is an murderous dictator, out of our love of freedom our policy is to assist the Russian people in throwing off their chains of repression. To cozy up to Putin we would be betraying the Russians clamoring for freedom and the values we as a nation hold dear.

PR, airfarceone is an expert on stupid questions. They are the only kind he knows how to ask. I would assume this expertise extends to answers for the same reasons.

By "values we as a nation hold dear" you mean opinions that you espouse?

People tend to forget that Russia was our ally in WW11 and we couldn't have defeated the Germans without them. We couldn't and didn't agree with them politically but they were damn good fighters. A little historic tidbit here, did you know that one of Russia's best snipers was a woman? And incidentally, the cold war was against the USSR, not Russia.

Because Trump wants us to be friends with Russia, if you're a democrat. If you're a repug, you're still caught up in the Boogie man mentality. But many of us understand that things have changed.

Essentially, we are friends, but vastly different in many ways and vastly alike in many ways. You can travel there freely and they can travel here freely. The media are the ones who paint the ugly picture of us all being enemies.

The short answer - cold war. The animosity began before WWII ended. The USSR endured staggering losses, both civilian and military, during the war, far more than the Western allies, so felt entitled to a larger piece of the pie when the victors began carving up the world. The Western allies were alarmed when the Soviet Union was able to recover from such devastating losses, field a huge army and match the US in industrial output and showed no gratitude for the help they received from the West.

The USSR's rapid recovery from the war, lack of respect and awe for the West, huge industrial output, rapid advances in nuclear weaponry ( due, in part, to spies infiltrating the US's nuclear program ), and global ambitions.................scared the pants off the West. This fear led to two more ground wars, ostensibly to stop the "red menace", i.e. spread of c*******m, a morass of intrigue, espionage and two generations of indoctrinated youngsters ( both in the USSR and the US ).

He is the best leader that Russia has had in a very long time.

I think they were more concerned with the global ambitions of the west (not just the US but Europe) than their own. Patton was already lobbying to take Russia from Russians. We were nuclear and had used it.

I think we need to consider perspective when speaking about Russia.

I believe that one day we will become allied with Russia and China and a few others. I base that on the growing Muslim population now in western Europe. Sooner or later they will become emboldened and declare a Caliph**e. Muslims living within the Russian confederation will begin a push to join their cohorts in the west. China & India, Japan and others will begin to feel the push of Islam from the middle east. With Islams numerical superiority we'd have to help each other or fall.

Obama's religion of peace is encroaching all over the world to take over. Europe is already 2/3 taken. That's their goal here especially in the US. Watch for Tlaib and Omar, they are the planted assets in Congress to push this forward. And the socialist-dems don't care.

An outcome I could live with.
