A friend I was with at party suddenly fainted and struck his head hard on a bannister and was unconscious. An ambulance took him under a mile to a Kaiser ER. He had blood tests, an IV, and a CT scan, and took 10 staples in the wound on his head. Turned out he was only severely dehydrated.
He was 5 hours in the ER. His co-pay was $50 which could have been $12,000 w/out his HMO; his 3/4 mile ambulance trip cost $3500, which Kaiser paid.
Care like he got could ruin someone who can’t afford normal insurance rates.
