Early life and education
Omar was born in Mogadishu on October 4, 1982,[4][5] and spent her early years in Baidoa, Somalia.[6][7] She was the youngest of seven siblings, including Sahra Noor. Her father Nur Omar Mohamed, an ethnic Somali, worked as a teacher trainer,[8] and her mother, Fadhuma Abukar Haji Hussein, a Benadiri (a community of partial Yemeni descent), died when Ilhan was two.[9][10][11][12] She was raised by her father and grandfather thereafter.[13] Her grandfather Abukar was the director of Somalia's National Marine T***sport and some of Omar's uncles and aunts also worked as civil servants and educators.[8] She and her family fled Somalia to escape the war and spent four years in a Dadaab refugee camp in Garissa County, Kenya, near the Somali border.[14][15][16]

Citizenship by derivation requires that foreign-born children who turned 18 years old on or after February 27, 2001, are eligible to gain citizenship through their parents. Ilhan Omar’s widely published birth date of October 4, 1981 means she turned 18 in 1999 and 19 in 2000, and therefore, was ineligible to gain citizenship by derivation.

And finally, Certificate of Citizenship under I.N.A. Section 322 would require Ilhan Omar’s father having already obtained U.S. citizenship before she turned 18 years of age. But given the Omar family arrived in the U.S. in 1995, and adult refugees having a five-year waiting period, means Ilhan’s father could not have applied for naturalization until the year 2000—when Ilhan was an adult. Ilhan Omar could not have gained citizenship through her father under I.N.A. Section 322."

It is not the age of the candidate, nor is it "Islamophobia" that is driving this issue. It is whether or not she has met the citizenship requirement to be a candidate in the first place.
