I guess that they come out and take soil samples for you and then the GPS puts in the right amount of fertilizer throughout the whole field so that you have a uniform crop at the end of the year. It is really getting awesome for the farmers that is for sure.

There fertilizer spreader trucks that have several compartments for different fertilizers.
Say one for Potash another for phosphorous another for nitrogen while driving thru a field that has been mapped with as you say from soil samples it can apply little or a lot of one material or another depending on what requirements that particulate spot needed .
Getting almost too high tech but it's a good way to not under or over apply fertilizer and or chemicals

I was thinking about this today on my route, and I think we also had the 4440. It had a gadget in it that told you how many acres an hour you were covering, and stuff like that. We also had one that had a 30 something number. I h**ed it because it had an open cab. It was mainly used for spraying, and pulling the digger during sugar beet harvest.
The 4430 was the workhorse most of the time. I remember it so well because I spent hours in it, and washed it more times than I can count.
Mind you, I worked on a research farm, so we didn't really farm in my mind, we piddled with stuff. And the farm manager was anal about the equipment.
If that guy is still there, those tractors are still in close to factory condition!
It made me kinda sad to crawl up in that poor old thing at my brothers place. It was long neglected, and sounded terrible when it started.

Arch I'll post some machinery pics in a stand alone thread sometime as I bet there are few here on OPP that has very much if any knowledge of what equipment is needed to put food on their table !

I know just enough about farm machinery, and impliments to make me stupid. It was a fun job, and I learned a lot, but I signed on to work with cattle, and they turned me into a farmer!
Lol! I can still get er done if I have to though!
As I'm out driving, I'm watching these guys out planting with some pretty elaborate looking rigs. I'm sure that some are corn, and some cotton, but I kinda miss that, and have a lot to learn there.
I wanna know how that all works. I mean the mechanics of it all.
And I also love, love, love watching the spray planes work! It's amazing how they manage to navigate the fields full of wind turbines.
