Processed foods.....if we take an actual look at our garbage output.

Processed food packaging is a huge enemy to the environment.

I would be interested in hearing who still makes most of their meals from scratch.

Processed foods are polluted with all manner of man-made foreign material.

Not only does processed food harm the environment near land fills and dumps with tons and tons of packaging.

It also is the cause of many of our ails.

Couldn't agree more...

Instant mashed potatoes... yuck...

Nothing better than garden fresh vegies and free range meat...

And baking bread is oddly relaxing...

Great post...

I live alone, am eighty five, and still cook my own meals. Processed food does not satisfy my tastes, and even canned food seems to have a metallic taste.
There is nothing like home made meals.

We have made our own bread for years, and grow most of the vegies that we eat. Most of the milk and eggs come from the neighbors chickens and goats, whether they know it or not(just kidding) we exchange vegies for eggs and milk and help them by giving the goats their v******tions and helping with the whether neutering. That has been the country way for centuries, and keeps the friendships alive.

Indeed my friend, you are a wealth of scratch food cooking, an art that has been attacked with convenience.

I would say that most of our meals are made from scratch with the freshest ingredients that can be found.
Because of our work schedules, and a busy life, we make big batches of stuff, and eat leftovers for a few days so we don't have to cook every day.

I want to look into making bread too. I've never done that. My granny did, and it was wonderful.

I'm big on packaging too. The amount of plastic that we put into the ground is staggering. Let alone what is scattered along roads, and everywhere else.

Right on Archie, I make big portions in the crock pot all the time.

Then refrigerate or freeze it.

Roadside refuse pisses me off, and the bottles of urine thrown out too.

One thing about this area, we have families and clubs or whoever, have roads that they maintain.

Our recycle is ten cents a bottle or can.

We have bicycle road buzzads who collect that bounty fairly steady.

Other countries that I have read about have a process to use discarded plastic to convert to other uses, fuel is one of them. When it becomes more profitable to process used plastic, it would be a great accomplishment to clean up our land and seas.

I cook only fresh veggies and meat. My husband had a heart problem and had to diet
In order to lose weight (50#) I started this fresh food ritual. It’s worked and I’ve had to work a little harder but it has saved him. Also, I must add cutting down on salt has helped tremendously. Using fresh lemon juice brings out the flavor better than salt, anyway.

I wish we had that kind of bounty on bottles and cans here. Maybe some of the dopers would do us some good, instead of stealing our stuff.

And, who can piss in a bottle while driving? I drove for a living for years, and I never did that!
They call them "trucker bombs" here because when people are picking up trash along the roads, and it's hot, they'll pop, and get piss all over the person.
And we have an 'Adopt a highway' program here where a group, or organization will go out, and take care of the trash.

You are a good person and taking care to prevent future suffering by your hubby...outstanding!

From your posts and replies, I already knew that you have class and humility.

I view humility toward loved ones as a virtue.

Trucker bombs, and immigrant bombs too.

Luckily we have plenty of woods handy and old logging and survey roads everywhere...very convenient.

My wife did that to me when my blood pressure got really bad. Now, I take no medications, and I'm fine.

Cutting down on salt was huge! Now, I find restaurant food salty most of the time.

Also, I only drink water most of the time. A little coffee, and some beer. I like my beer. But not to excess.
