I'm more of a libertarian. Be that as it may, why is it the many should be restricted because of the actions of a very few? Why should we allow the continued squeeze on our rights to pacify those who live in fear?

I believe in personal rights however with those rights come responsibility. Laws maintain a civil society. It is a bunch of dung that a few insane individuals out of millions can make some laws neccesary and I agree with that. Perhaps extreme punishments for crimes involving guns could make a deterrent --- I for one am for that. I buy guns and usually wait5 minutes for my background check to process and out I walk weapon in hand. I bought my first gun from a Montgomery Ward catalog and it was mailed to me when I was 14. Seems too easy and a likely way that people with a history of violence and mental illness pass background checks and purchase a fire arm. I know people with over 100 firearms so I know darn well that there are more guns in this country than there are people. That fact means that firearms are passed hand to hand with no one being the wiser. What can you do about that? Not much. What we can control we should give an honest effort to. The life that could be saved could be yours. Just a note --our daughter was in the Clackamas mall shooting and was hiding in the Sears store and on the phone with us through the ordeal. Unless you have been there you may never understand or you may be someone who does not want to---I don't know.
