New Zealand bans the sale of semi automatic guns....
The right better start looking as sensible things like background checks, mental health, and magazine sizes or the backlash will go further.
You can blame bigotry and hatred for muslims

The NZ Gun Shop owner who sold him the guns was interviewed on NZ television. Owning a semi-automatic rifle in Australia is virtually impossible and the theory is that he chose NZ for the attack because it was easier to obtain guns there and security was lax or non-existent around the soft targets he had in his sights.
It is not yet clear if the ban only applies to new sales or will include a buy-back of existing rifles already in private hands.

I am a gun owner and I have used guns my entire life. With all the mass k*****gs it is high time we do support stricter background checks-- banning of high capacity magazines and screw the NRA. I believe in the second amendment but I am s**k of it being used as an excuse for doing nothing at all.

We already do background checks. Mental health is everyone's problem, lot of it going around. But what the hell do magazine sizes have to do with anything? With a semi-auto firearm, it takes 2 seconds to drop an empty mag, insert a loaded one, release the bolt, and begin shooting again. Doesn't matter how many rounds the magazine holds.
IOW, a shooter can fire 30 rounds from three 10 round mags or from one 30 round mag in just about the same amount of time. Banning high capacity mags will not deter a determined k**ler.
And, the idea of banning semi-auto firearms is beyond stupid. There are approximately 1 billion firearms in the world, 85% of them are in civilian hands. Semi-auto firearms are manufactured all over the world, guns are on the move 24/7, and no doubt criminals will get their hands on them. Banning semi-autos and high cap mags would have little to no effect in reducing crime or mass k*****gs. Criminals and gangs would definitely have the advantage of superior fire power over law abiding citizens. It's a good bet that the only value in a law banning them would be the paper upon which the law is written, you could use it to wipe your ass.

"Mental health": We need to be very concerned about it. This, like many other things, is a vague idea if left to 'the government'. Some of you might be old enough to remember the Soviets claimed anyone wanting to leave the 'workers paradise' was obviously crazy. So gun control laws crafted around mental health are very dangerous to freedom.

They are (or were) tighter than US states because of background check and requirement to sit exam for Gun Licence but most firearms including handguns are permissible.

Going down that road is indeed dangerous. The Soviets used to grab any dissidents for ‘mental health’ reasons for re-education. It can certainly happen here. And it will if the progressive agenda keeps moving forward.
America needs to wake up.

I'm more of a libertarian. Be that as it may, why is it the many should be restricted because of the actions of a very few? Why should we allow the continued squeeze on our rights to pacify those who live in fear?

Yeah, thanks to liberal progressivism, things haven't gotten worse, much worse.
