Reagan, the leader, knew that the US, a force for good in the world, shouldn’t settle for MAD or Mutually Assured Destruction with an evil empire as he called c*******t Russia. He knew we deserved more.
Not only did he not agree to freeze nuclear arms, he doubled down! Remember Star Wars? He would take the battle to outer space. And with that stroke of genius, he won the Cold War. I don't know if you remember the gas lines when Carter was president. Everyone was assigned a number so you could know what day you could get gasoline. Often the lines went around the block. Or remember when the Ayatollah Komenie captured all the Americans in Iran. Carter was such a wimp, he never did get the hostages back. Or remember when Carter told us that a malaise had descended on us and we should just learn to accept it. Carter was a terrible leader. It's what he did as president that counts.
Reagan came in and took charge. As people have a right to expect from someone who they've elected president. Just as Reagan was taking the oath of office Komenie released all the hostages, cuz he knew Reagan wouldn't put up with it as Carter had for years. And Reagan got our economy humming along.
As far as what Carter did after his presidency, great! A real humanitarian. Habitat for Humanity. Maybe he should have just done that and never been president. Because as president he sucked!
