EconomistDon: what do the Kennedy brothers have to do with it? I don't see similar motives.
Since you asked politely, I will give you what I know. The Kennedys were anti-establishment, anti-war. The establishment loves war, thrives on war. The establishment wanted to assassinate Castro. They could not just barge into Cuba and k**l him; they needed a reason. Their plan was for a group of CIA to impersonate Cubans and k**l some Americans. That would provide a reason for the public to support an assassination of Castro. Kennedy refused the plan. The Establishment wanted a first strike nuclear attack on Russia. They reasoned that we had superiority on nuclear bombs, we would win. They estimated that we would lose a few million people for the total destruction of Russia. Kennedy refused the plan. When the Cuban missile crisis hit, the establishment wanted to go into Cuba with guns blazing. For nearly two weeks, they pressed Kennedy to approve their plan, while Kennedy looked for a better solution. Kennedy chose to set up a blockade to prevent Russian ships from delivering nuclear rockets parts to Cuba. Finally Russia gave in after the loss of only one American pilot. The Establishment wanted to escalate fighting in Viet Nam, but Kennedy wanted to limit our contribution to "advisors". The Establishment wanted to pile on, LBJ wanted to pile on. Recent revelations show that LBJ was in on the Kennedy assassination. Just days earlier, LBJ told his mistress that things would be "different" after Dallas. Kennedy was k**led; the war in Viet Nam escalated and the Cold War with Russia got colder.
Reagan was anti-Establishment and was nearly k**led by the establishment just two months into his Presidency. But he survived and ended the Cold War with Russia. The Berlin Wall came down.
After Reagan, the Establishment had control of three Presidents. Both Bushes were in deep with the establishment, just like their father Prescott Bush. George W. probably knew that there were no weapons of mass destructin in Iraq, but the Establishment wanted to go in, so Bush approved it. Obama gave the Establishment everything they wanted, setting the entire Middle East aflame. Obama put troops in Iraq, Iran, Packistan, Lybia, and Syria ---- k*****g people. His drone attacks k**led many innocent civilians. Furthermore, the Establishment was deeply entrenched in politics, corrupting much of Obama's administration.
Enter Trump promising to end the corruption and get us out of pointless war in the Middle East. He campaigned on that, so he alienated the Establishment from the beginning. Trump has cleaned out the top corrupted level of the DOJ and the FBI. And he is extracting us from deadly involvement in the Middle East. The Establishment h**es this and criticized him as a mad man for pulling out of Syria.
PJ, the Establishment is not just one party or the other, if that is what you think. The Establishment runs the country through any politician they can control. Only a few Presidents in our lifetime have stood up to the Establishment. And each have made tremendous contributions to promoting, and safeguarding peace in the world.
