Yes in IL we have toll roads, gas tax, emissions testing, and high DMV fees. After years of paying $2.00 tolls on the interstates our roads are still so pothole ridden they blow your car tires.

A Senator in California is presenting a new tax law aimed straight at the middle class: a tax levied for each mile you drive in your personal vehicle.

The tax is being introduced as the current revenue from the current gasoline tax drops due to more and more Americans driving fuel-efficient cars. The tax would be levied by your car insurance company, who would check the mileage on each and every vehicle you insure and add the tax to your monthly bill.

Democrats support the new tax for two reasons: one, it would encourage people to drive less and thus help the planet, and two it would generate much needed revenue for states as they struggle to pay their bills.

Republicans are arguing that this is simply another tax hike by Democrats aimed at destroying the middle class and thus putting more and more Americans who once were able to fend for themselves on government-assistance programs. They are upset about the already enormous tax burden on the shrinking workforce. People who work for a living must commute, and with public t***sportation really only being available in urban communities, they would have no choice but to pay this additional tax along with the taxes they already pay: gasoline and sales tax, fees for license and tags, clean air taxes, as well as a slew of other taxes and fees.

So now those who chose to help out the planet by choosing a more fuel-efficient vehicle gets punished?

What do you think?

BUENA PARK (CBSLA.com) — The California Legislature is looking at a voluntary program that would tax motorists for every mile they drive.

KCAL9’s Bobby Kaple reports that Sen. Mark DeSaulnier, D-Concord, introduced a bill to test out the vehicle miles traveled (VMT) tax because the state’s gas tax was no longer bringing in the revenue it used to due to people driving more fuel efficient vehicles.

The program is modeled after ones in Oregon and Washington.

“We want to do as Washington and Oregon have done in a much bigger state with much longer commutes…to make sure that we find out whether it would work, whether the public would like it or not,” DeSaulnier said.

It’s unknown how much the tax would be, but Oregon currently charges its volunteers 1.5 cents per mile.

“All of those things would be determined. We would let the agency determine that because this would be a voluntary program,” DeSaulnier said.

Southland commuters were not thrilled about the idea of a VMT tax.

“I bought a hybrid…one, because of my drive. I’m very opposed. I drive to Brentwood every day from Burbank, and I am already paying more than I should be,” Carmen Smith said.

“So if we go on vacation and I drive up to Mammoth, that’s 600 miles. We’re being taxed on vacations?” Kim Robinson said.

Right now it is in California. It will spread if successful. This is talking about charging you per mile driven in ADDITION to the gas tax.

Why can't our "government" just totally legalize and tax recreational pot? More people use pot than drive cars. Or is that too easy?

Gax tax money is going to mass t***sit, high speed rail, mass t***sit, bike lanes and all kinds of project they can think of. A major depletion of gas tax revenue is tunnel construction like the one or two in Boston. More money will be spent on that project that would be consumed by a 8 lane freeway across the great state of Kansas.

Don't forget electric cars pay no gas tax. And don't forget every things goes by truck. Goods will cost you more. It's like a sleeper tax. The truckers will pass their tax onto you. And don forget the EPA is closing 140 coal fired power plants driving up electric costs to recharge those plugins. Enjoy your blood running in the streets.

Obum's Czar, Mr. Lew, said 6 yrs ago, "higher prices for energy is a good thing. people will use less and help the environment." Have all my conservative friends noticed that the Obuma Adm. is neutralizing the checks and balances by obstructing congress in their investigations of the adm. In the past few weeks gas prices here in N,. California have gone from $3.57 to $4.40 a gal. What happened? The Ukraine. If the Keystone had been started 5 yrs ago the Ukraine would not have an effect on gas prices in the US. How much has Obuma cost you because of his environmental policies.
I have all curly pig tail lights, well pump, washer/dryer, cloth line (free dry & used),tv and refer at my house. It cost me $130 a month minimum. I remember when it was half that. Environmental regs is driver to higher prices. Higher prices for gas& electricity is a ploy to drive us into solar and electric power cars. I want o know how to power those big trucks on electricity.

The funny thing is electric cars were built in an effort to overcome c*****e c****e, but electricity is, in fact, just as polluting as oil. 25% of electricity is generated by dirty coal, and nearly all the rest by nuclear power plants. How is that helping c*****e c****e? In addition to that, now they are losing revenue on the gasoline tax, and have to come up with an alternative.

They certainly did not think the whole thing through very well.

C'mon little boys
Your roads are needing repairs all over the US. What are you going to do about it? The first thing would be to eliminate RTPeeers. This,so,rational discussions can take place.

Huggins,
C'mon give it a break.
Cheneys secret oil co meetings not only divided up Iraq oil fields prior to the bush invasion but also allowed all the major mergers that destroyed competition. So put the blame where it belongs. Bushies set us up to be Enroned. Domestic crude is the cheapest oil in the world and we are paying global prices for it. Wake up. Destroy all Oil company welfare and spend the money on the roads. Start taxing oil company revenue as a gouging tax.
